I've been playing this game with a few friends just to test out the mechanics and such. The game has been loads of fun and I'm looking at building a IN navy starting at around 1000 points and moving from there.
So here we go:
I like the lances that each of the Gothics and pack, and the set of 45cm batteries on the Tyrants are nice to reach out and be able to touch something if need be. Dictator mostly because I've had a lot more luck with bombers than anything an escort can pack. Oh, and any advice on if anything here should be squadroned? I'm thinking the Dictator being solo and two squadrons of a Gothic and Tyrant.
- Fleet-Admiral w/ 2 re-rolls
x3 Dauntless-class (Squadroned)
x2 Tyrant-class (solo)
Variant of the first, but the lances are concentrated in the light cruisers
I've been looking over the rules. Are Nova Cannons worth taking at all? The range is very nice yes, but with scatter you'll only really just tickle the shields. And if ships end up getting close, trying to swing the nose around to make a shot is going to be more difficult. Unless I'm reading the rules a bit wrong. Granted on the chance of landing one of those shells on a base makes me giggle inside.
And do escorts also have the minimum move distance (half the max speed) rule?
The biggest problem with the nova cannon is that you have to guess the range before shooting. So if your good at eyebaling range, then its a great artillery weapon. If not, then its a better idea to invest in more carriers.
Not too sure about the escort move distnace Q tho.
If I remeber escorts can turn at any point and do not have to move a min distance before turning. But I think they do still have to move half their move distance no matter what.
#25 - Relation to the original topic decreases with every single post.
Where have you been? Nova Cannon is a scatter weapon. They ditched the guess range NC
in a FAQ after the original release. Now, in the current rulebook, the NC has become officially
a scatter weapon.
On the fleets:
I'm no fan of Tyrants.
I think the following setup is better:
if the Dictator roles high enough Ld make sure you place the fleet admiral on another ship.
Rolled a game tonight with the list that horizon suggested. Man, that was an intense game, wish I had recorded what happened it would have made a nice battle report.
Any, the opponent was chaos who for some weird reason had a love of escort vessels. I think it was some 3 cruisers, and grand cruiser, and a handful of escorts (two squadrons). Scenario was fleet engagement and I ended up on the bad side of wedge-sphere deployment (I had the wedge).
Terrain helped me out though, managed to nestle the fleet between a set of asteroid fields to force an attack from the front with a planet and some gas clouds strewn about the outer edges of the playing field.
Leadership rolls for the dictator and a gothic ended up sucking at a 6 each, decided on putting the admiral on the dictator. First two turns weren't too eventful. One nova cannon shot hit its mark on a cruiser and scored a point of damage, second shot went wide. First squadron of escorts scored some damage on a gothic class.
After a few rounds, went on crippling one of his cruisers. Kinda funny story on that one, wasn't even aiming for that ships. Torpedoes ALL missed their target and plowed into the one behind it. Bombers did wonders. Third (and last) nova cannon shot of the game went wide again, only hitting the shields on a cruiser. Wiped out an annoying escort squadron that managed to do a good deal of damage.
Started getting very worried when the combined fire of 2 cruisers and an escort squadron completely brought down the dominator (failed the Brace for Impact roll and the Re-roll as well. Commisars weren't doing they're duty apparently) and crippled a gothic. Hilariously this puny leadership vessel (after failing every other order) managed to make every Brace for Impact the entire game. Guess the summary execution did a number to get these guys in line, heheh.
End result was:
2 ships crippled (Disengaged)
1 squadron of escorts destroyed
Wiped out half of another squadron. (Disengaged)
All ships disengaged
1 Ship destroyed
2 Ships crippled (Disengaged)
The end was very up-in the air for who could have won. My Dictator only had two points of damaged on it and the Lunar was at full. Both his cruiser and grand cruiser had some damage and half a squadron was still at full.
About the only thing that was holding either of us on the field was the drifting hulk of my Dominator. On gothic was able to blow it up before disengaging. At that point both of my ships had been able to wheel around and have torpedoes and bombers ready to launch.
Chaos decided to run rather with all his ships with the trophy of the hulk no longer on the field rather than fight risk another crippled or destroyed ship.
I ended up winning that bout by 80 victory points.
All in all, Gothics and Dictator did the most damage. Dominator was pretty much just a paper weight on the table and drew a lot of fire. Might swap this one out for a squadron of escorts or another cruiser (another Lunar would be nice)
Would be neat if you could post the exact Chaos list. Sounds like a fun battle.
I advice greatly against dropping the Dominator.
I'll see if I can get a hold of the guy next time.
Quick question on the special orders. Can you go on special orders during your turn (IE Lock On, Reload, etc) and still Brace for Impact in your opponents turn? I'm not too clear on that.
Yes, you can.
