Afternoon fellow LOers.
After starting Blood bowl last year I've now decided to creep along to BFG (perhaps Epic next year ). To get started I'll just compile everything I've done so far with a few questions to help me along the way.

1) I've downloaded most of the rules (About 400 pages total!! BB was only 60!) and reading through them. Biggest question I've got is on fleet lists. I got this:

Just wondering how I could use this in a normal game. I'm starting with a 1000pt IN fleet then picking up a 1000pt Eldar to compliment my 40k armies and it's also useful to have 2 fleets in case no one turns up with one

2) Bought 2 sets of IN carriers for now to fiddle with. Most likely get an Emperor to get up to 1000pts. Thinking of:

Emperor class - 365 fleet admiral - 50
Dictator class - 220
Gothic class - 180
Gothic class - 180
Total - 995

The above fleet compendium will be used to go above 1000pts (soooo want an =][= black ship )

3) To make Battle cruisers do you just use the cruiser box set but add dorsal weapons?

4) If a ship has: prow weapons battery 60cm 5 Front/right/left and port weapons battery 60cm 6 left would you combine the fire power for one st11 shot or would you have to keep them separate? Same question but asked a different way, if one battery was 45cm and the other 60cm but the enemy ship was only 30cm away could you combine fire power?

5) The one thing I haven't printed off yet is planets, asteroids, fighters, bombers, torps etc as I'm not yet playing just picking up the rules. When I do come to play, call me stupid as I must of missed it in the BFG rule book, what size board do you play on?

First off, welcome to the Universe of Space combat, im sure that you will find playing the game as enjoyable as any other, if not a bit chaotic at times when your getting into the heart of a battle, but hey, isnt that what we are all after in a game ?

It depends on who you are playing against, the official imperial fleet lists can be found here http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_...ial_Fleets.pdf it gives you the options and information to field either a Space Marine chapter fleet, Armagedon sector fleet or Gothic sector fleet. Personaly, i had no problem if people wished to field ships from diferent lists in a mix and match way as long as they followed the limitations of 1 battlecruiser for every 2 cruisers, and 1 battleship for every 3 cruisers or battlecruisers contained in a fleet. In a tournament you would be expected to use a specific list but in friendly games i dont see any reason why you cant use any ships you want as long as u follow the above rule . Therefore you could use the ships in that article in a fleet .

Solid fleet list to start off with, gives you alot of air superiority. The only change i would make is possibly change the Gothics to Lunar Classes as they have a more all round role, having both lances, weapon batteries and torpedoes. The inquisition ships have always drawn me i must admit . I gave up playing the game a while back because finding oponents was like hitting my head against a brick wall, but now with the release of the mechanicus ships, im realy tempted to start up again .....must...resist...urge......not....enough...cash...haha.

3) To make Battle cruisers do you just use the cruiser box set but add dorsal weapons?

Its the easiest thing in the world to do, obviously make sure that you have the weapon options on the sides right to the profile given, but to show that they are Battlecruisers take 2 of the individual turrets from the sprues and place them in the spaces on the top of the cruiser where antenae would normaly go.

Yes you can combime the batteries to give them higher strength as long as both bateries can 'see' the target and they are both in range, if not then it has to be taken individualy. Having different ranges on the batteries dosent matter they can still be combined. The same goes for escorts in squadrons, thier batteries should always be combined because they are so weak alone, and cruisers in squadrons can ellect to combine their batteries if both are in range .

I dont think that there is a limit on the size of a board, the only rules that apply are the deployment positions as described in the scenario sections of the rule book, found here http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_..._Scenarios.pdf.

Awesome, I started with BFG and moved to 40k. I have both IG and Imperial Navy as well and playing the two together in campaigns is FUN.

Just wondering how I could use this in a normal game. I'm starting with a 1000pt IN fleet then picking up a 1000pt Eldar to compliment my 40k armies and it's also useful to have 2 fleets in case no one turns up with one

While a lot of these are cool, my group usually plays pretty strict and follows the fleet lists in Armada and the Rulebook. The stuff from the compendium is subject to the Reserves rule for our games.

Up to your group though.

To make it to 1000 just take the Shark Assault Boats upgrade.

Always magnetize the weapons so you can swap stuff in and out at will depending on what you like using. Not sure on the Emperor at 1000 points, the thing is a beast but I don't start adding him in until around 1500 points. Escorts in the form of cobras or swords are very nice.

You've got more than enough ordnance fighters with the emperor at 1000 points and I find that the dictator is over priced for what it does, but eh, your call.

Tactics dictate the outcome of battles in BFG more-so than unit choice. 12 squadrons of attack craft at 1000 points sounds like a lot of fun to play, though.

For up to 1500 points my group plays with a 6x4 table. When games get larger than that we just move over to a ping-pong table.

I shall have to see about my local GW store about the rules on the compendium. I'm quite spoilt at my store (Liverpool UK) because EVERYTHING is represnted in some form or another, proberly only warmaster is not played.

The idea for the list was to have a wall of torps with fighters behind and then the capitol ships. Shall look into the luner class. Only thing is that I'm trying to stear clear of the Nova cannon. Want to go old fashioned broardsides!

Time got get reading all these rules then wait for the models to arrive next week. More than likely order anything else I need then too so should be up and running in a couple of weeks.
