Welcome to Librarium Online!
My local store is starting into BFG again and asked for new players. I am thinking about starting a Chaos fleet but I am not sure what I should buy as a starter fleet. Any ideas on what would make a nice first buy?
Chaos cruisers are a safe bet as you will need those and they come in handy dandy plastic kits for only 30 dollars i think
in small scale games i would suggest looking into escorts as well they are extremely fast and can outmanoeuvre almost all other escorts and all capital ships (as far as i know)
but it would be prudent to play the first games with blank cruisers so that you can get the feel for the game and then decide what you want to put on them
you could go for modular cruisers and make the guns magnetic
its up to you and everyone plays differently just make sure you like what you are playing
and don't power game your list or you will soon have no one to play with
Imperial Guard- Canon Fodder of the Imperium
2 Cruiser boxes (4 ships) and a pack of escorts (I'd pick Infidels for the Torpedoes) should get you a solid 1000 point list.
You're going to want to build up one of the cruisers as a Devastation class carrier - it's your general purpose workhorse carrier, and your best bet for working fighter cover into games too small for a Styx (which is an absolute beast, but you pay tons of points for it!). After that, it's your call. The Carnage class boasts an unrivalled set of broadside batteries (it out-shoots battleships!), while the Murder trades some of that raw firepower for long ranged lances. Slaughter class cruisers get a bad reputation due to their short range, but if you're willing to slug it out at close quarters it's a delightful brawler (and blazing fast, too!).
This makes my inital order a lot less confusing. Now I dont have to worry about ordering a Panet Killer and a couple of Blackstone Fortresses.
You should decide on what you like more as playstyle. Some testing before would be good. In my opinion Chaos has two main approaches:
A) The Broadside
Take 2 Devastations, 2 Carnages as a core. Add Archeron or two and a Desolator. Excellent broadsides, all ships with same purpose.
The Head on charge
Take a core of 2 Murders & a Hades. That's 8 lances @ 60 in the front arc. Lock on and have fun. Styx is good idea to add (more 60cm lances) and 2 more Murders (4 more 60cm lances).
Under 45 cm you get good broadsides as well.
