lately I've been spending more and more time thinking I should be playing BFG, or at least having a good go at it.
I've had a quick look through the rules online and I understand the basics of how the game plays, but the next step is to get a fleet and start playing it.
I've seen that the common advice is to go for 4 cruisers and a squad of escorts, which seems reasonable enough to me. I'm an Imperial player in 40k and I plan to stay the same in BFG.
I'm quite happy to go with the standard Navy Fleet to begin with, and I'm thinking my cruisers would probably be a mixture of types so I can use all the different "skill sets" available (lance, nova, torpedo, carrier).
My first query may be a matter of taste, but I was wondering sort of escorts are a good one to start out with?
My second query is this. I'm an Ultramarines player first and foremost, so I want to get some Space Marine ships into the fleet. Is this I) wise and II) easy to do? I'm hoping it's fairly simple to integrate a Strike Cruiser or two and maybe a Battle Barge, but I was hoping for some advice from people who may have done or considered it themselves.
Sword Frigates are allround and good escorts. Cobra's are also cool but a little niftier in use. Go with Swords as a starter.
Incorporating Imperial Navy & Space Marines can be easily done with Battlefleet Armageddon fleet list (check Imperial Fleets pdf from armada at the GW site).
With the new draft2010 rules Marines are better fleshed out.
Cheers for the advice. I did have a look and thought Swords would probably be a good start because they had the simplest weapons!
I did also look at the Firestorm, since it the lance would be nice, but I wasn't sure if that would make them too much of a target!
I've had a look at the Armageddon list and that does look good, so I think once I have the basics out of the way I will add a Strike Cruiser or two and then a Battle Barge.
Where are the 2010 draft rules? I only have the ones from the GW site, are they on there or am I missing something? All I have done so far is download and look over the stuff available on the GW pages, so forgive my ignorance.
I cant give you any advice on playing, rules, or the Imperial fleet, but I have built up a large space marine fleet, and can comment on the models. The GW Battle barge and Strike cruisers are lovely looking models but being metal are a bit fiddly to assemble, especially the Barge. The Hunter, Gladius, and Nova escorts are one piece models and look ok, but in my opinion are not a patch on the Forgeworld versions. These look much more like smaller versions of the capitol ships and are very detailed. FW also do a very nice Thunderhawk gunship, that looks great when you have large numbers coming on in a wave.
My BFG Marine fleet has been sadly neglected as I endeavour to clear my backlog of painting for my 40K DIY chapter, but I will get round to them eventually. Good luck with your fleet sir.
Jager bombs. Very efficient at wiping out friend or foe.
I thought I would start with some basic Imperial Navy ships to learn the game then start to add marine vessels with time, I have no problem using a combined fleet as that's what the Ultramarines do anyway I agree about the FW marine escors too!
One thing I do lack with not getting the boxed set is the torpedo and attack craft markers, I will have to try to print out the ones from the GW site but it would be nicer if there was something available in plastic!
Actually, from the new FAQ 2010 the standard template size for torps is the str3 torpedo marker with a dice on top to represent the strength. This corresponds quite good with the 2x2cm bases from Warhammer. So printed torps on such a base and done with it.

Thanks for hooking me up with the links, I'lkl have a read but I think I'll stick to the official rules for now until I learn the system a bit better. I do have some plasticard so I will probably make the markers out of that, that should make them sturdy enough!
I too have done this exact same thing (joint Imperium and Marine force - Cadian/Catchan and Dark Angels / Adeptus Mechanicus)
A mars class battlecruiser, a dauntless (lance) a Tyrant cruiser and a space marine strike cruiser make 750 points (with 4x cruisers)
I also have 5x swords (which add a admiral and 1x re-roll is 1000 points total)
I want the fighters / bombers (with the launch capability of 8, and 2 thunderhawks)
- I know the list isn't exactly legal (strike cruiser?) but it matches the 40k armies so well.
For torpedo counters I got epic bases, filled them in and added clipped paperclip to the two end holes on each side, then got the marine missile launcher "loose" milliles, filed one edge flat and drilled them in, then attached by superglue - it's a bit fiddly, but there's perfect space for a D6 for strength
#(err.. i didn't know about the recommended size until reading this)
I was going to get the fighters and bombers and do the same with them
## and boarding torpedoes would be done by the missile method above, but using spare IG mortars. (maybe some varient missiles with the "krak" missile on the marine HW missile ammo clip - the one with the long nose)
I've also filled in some epic bases and superglued a IG missile launcher missile for a "loaded" counter - just plonk it on the ship detail sheet when armed.
(and the same to be done with spare bombers / fighters)
To be expanded with marine "hunter " escorts (It is DA, they're even mentioned in the fluff as the designers!) a Emperor battleship, a f/w strike cruiser (my Ad Mech marines) and 2x Imp cruisers (what's the 2x weapon cruiser? I should have spares from the emperor.. I hope it's part plastic anyway)
Oh, and some ground based defenses will be made too
Will you show pics? p.s. be careful filing down the nose of the cruisers - I'm annoyed at both of mine. (drat!)
I had a bit of a break from posting due to illness but I'm back now. My progress hasn't been much - I have ordered 2 sets of 2 Imperial Cruisers, a pack of Swords and a pack of Firestorms, and I'm waiting for them (they have been severely delayed in the post due to weather by the look of things). Looks like they are going to be a christmas present though! Based on that, I'm going to try to get my counters made up before christmas so I'm not too delayed in getting my first game.
I also tried to order some of the Epic Order Dice, but GW then told me they are no longer available (and marked them as so on the site) so I'll have to make some order markers as well. Grr, need more plasticard now!
Those are some good ideas about modelling the counters. I know FW and GW do some models for fighters\bomber\boarding craft, but I will try with the plain counters for now until I have played a few games.
I've also been reading through the rules repeatedly and written a couple of lists just to get my mind around how they work, which should help when the time comes.
The marine vessels are still calling to me though... argh!
I'll shove up some photo's later (and what i've done so far, and what i'm planning)
and some defence emplacement markers (mini fortress of redemption - as i've done that for planetary empires - airfield ideas (using spare bombers, landspeeder parts, lascannon parts, and other bits)
I wanted to have a go at blast markers too, I'm in 2 minds if i want to make them 3d as it'll affect putting stuff on top of them.
The GW bombers come with epic bases (and their own little stands)
Right now i'm concerned about doing transport models - FW are £ 10 for 2, which is just a bit too much when i'm watching what I spend and need 4-lots. Monitor ships? some RT ships? old spacefleet ones? transports that do hit ebay are at a phenomenal price.
Oh, hints and tips: Pinning your metal models into a flight stand is fairly important yet niggly.
Oh, and for the love of god don't try to pin a Emperor class battleship together when Incredibly hungover, after 3 hours of frustration you may just bang it together with frustration (the bottom section had 4 pin attempts, all clipped off and filed back down) and it's a bit of a shame.
I'll also do my list and explanation of it later too. (and thoughts of what I need)
