I'm thinking of putting together a new Spyrer gang, and something struck me. It seems like almost all Spyrer gangs I've seen include at least one of each suit type. While this definitely creates the most variety in terms of models, I'm not so sure any more that it's tactically the best option.
In my case, I've always found the Orrus to be the odd man out, and while I've had some success with him in the past he doesn't really seem to feed into the tactics of the others. That's not to say he's useless or bad, in fact I think you could build quite an intimidating ranged Spyrer gang by using purely Orruses and Yelds, but for the most part Spyrers seem to be about stealth and speed, and the Orrus doesn't add much to that.
With this in mind, how about this as a setup:
Jakara (6 bonus xp)
Malcadon (6 bonus xp)
Malcadon (6 bonus xp)
Yeld (6 bonus xp)
Yeld (4 bonus xp)
Basically, Jakara for duelling (as the others will have problems with sword wielders and dedicated close combat guys) and breaking overwatch, Malcadons for speed and ability to charge up walls and Yelds for pinning and stealth abilities. I think those work quite well together, and I'm not sure what an Orrus would add (except maybe some extra fire-power in 'home defence' missions).
The overall concept is to use hiding extremely liberally and try and avoid being detected until I can set up for a charge. Not a strategy I've tried much before, so I'd appreciate input.
It's going to depend on your terrain a great deal. There will be a lot of situations where you can't hide or stay out of sight, especially in scenarios beyond the official ones. I think your other problem will be overwatch - they can wait for you to try to move across an open space and nail you then WHAMMO! There are also some tactics that will be able to short-circuit your approach, such as sending out a juve at your position and forcing you out of hiding to be shot by others.
None of those are insurmountable problems or challenges, just ones that I can think of. I haven't played as the Spyer side, but I've played against them enough to know how I would respond.
I loved Spyre from the start. The Orrus I treat as a tank. He hit out and draws the fire from the toher gangs. While I use two "Mals" to do the rest of my fighting. The yeld pins down people from the high tops. Mals you have to think like "Spiderman". Very easy to out manuvor the other gangs. I also ran a 2 Jakara and 2 Mal team before. Both are very good in both hand to hand if you build them right and pal them up. I tend to play Escher and Spyre the most with very dense terrian. The only teams I really feared was when I fight other Spyre or Enforcers. I have been playing since the box set came out.
