I've started playing BFG recently, and am having problems with my regular opponent. I've got a small torpedo-heavy Imperial fleet with a Dictator and some Swords, and he's composed almost entirely of Terror ships. Torpedoes get eaten up by the vast amount of ordnance he can pump out, and in order to get close enough to use other weapons I invariably wind up too close and swamped with everything, and end up fleeing for whatever terrain is available to disengage. Are there any tips for dealing with this, as the ordinance he produces seems proof against almost everything I can throw at it.
Any advice would be great.
I'm a rookie myself so consider taking all this with a pinch (or a bucket) of salt. Have you tried playing as Adeptus Mechanicus? All their ships (barring escorts) get an extra turret which should help deal with ordnance. As an example, an Ad-Mech Oberon class Battleship has a Turret value of 6, making bombers completely ineffective against it. Adding to that, many Ad-Mech ships get an extra dorsal lance.
If that doesn't work, then... I dunno, maybe spam Nova cannons?
As the offending party. I've been fielding 3-4 terror ships (usually squadroned) and a kill kroozer (with extra shield, points pending), all with torpedoes instead of prow heavy gunz.
My own take on the situation (posting it here so others can confirm or deny, apologies if it sounds patronizing as I'm a noob too) is that you tend to put all your 'gun' cruisers in a squadron. The times I've taken a beating have always been when you've managed to get something behind me, and that's hard when all your ships are bunched together. You also tend to favour torpedoes over guns, which is weird as all most of my ships have rubbish shields. The times I've got hurt have generally been when you're firing weapons/lance batteries at side or rear armour.
You also gave up on Nova Cannons too quickly, in my opinion. The one game you used one it was actually pretty effective, just not the titanic superweapon I think we were both expecting. I hid behind asteroids because I was scared of it, unorky I know.
Being a semi noob these are my thoughts
One how big is your games some fleets become unbalanced in very small games
Two use more nova cannon while torpedoes are very very good nova cannons are good two
As both your fleets are strongest when facing there enemy get to the side or behind but especially as you are against orks armour 4 is a much better prospect then armour 6
I have not gone up against orks yet I am a chaos player and take on IN most of the time
Also my advice is as you grow your fleet buy more of the mid sized ships while every fleet should have a few escorts as the fleet gets bigger the percent of your points you spend that way should go down in favourer of ordnance ( I should say however as a chaos player I am heavy biased away from escorts so take this with a grain of salt)
I will give it some more though and post back up if I get any other ideas
