im just interested what other people thing about the Styx. does it cost too much? is it worth having it in a fleet? in my opinion yes it costs a lot but it is a fairly good ship. it is fast, has good weapon ranges and 3 turrets. it costs almost as much as a battleship and yet it only has 2 shields. i think if it has 3 shields it would make all those 290 points count. what do u think?
DOWN WITH THE FALSE EMPEROR!!!MAY HIS GALAXY BURN!!!
To let you know, I have visited a few other BFG forums and I have seen this topic beaten to death twice over, then hanged. It seems that every other Chaos player has a different opinion, so don't expect a consensus here either.
Personally, I like it just the way it is. Sure, it'd be great to have a lower price for it, but that's the Chaos in me talking. The Imperial and Eldar admirals in me want it to stay, of course. Is it overpriced? I could go back on forth on why yes, indeed it is, and I could also give a dozen reasons on why its good that it stays put. The main reason why it should stay as is is because if you adjust its price, it will have a domino effect. How many changes are too many? If I take the Styx down, non-Chaos players will want the Devastation to go up, because they don't want Chaos to have 2 cheap carrier options. You'll have to adjust the whole Chaos list to balance it out again.
Ask yourself this: have you ever seen a Chaos ship fielded more often than any other? Ok, bad example. Have you ever seen a Styx heavy fleet? I'm going to guess that no, you haven't. Many players, even those who say the Styx is worth its cost, are wary to take more than one. That would be close to 600 points for two ships. If you lower the cost, all of a sudden you're going to see every Chaos player with a Styx, every single game. In large games, you'll see 2 or 3 Styx cruisers. Its balanced now because the cost is 290 points and people in every BFG forum I know of are still debating whether its worth it or not. If it truly wasn't worth its cost, the debate would have been settled long ago and no one would field a Styx. If it was lowered, everyone would know its a steal and the Styx would become far too common a sight on the tabletop. Right now, some players consider the Styx to be too risky - not worth the gamble. Others are willing to see what they get when they include it, and either fall in love with it, hate it, or become rather indifferent. I'm glad there is no one ship that EVERYONE adores. That way of thinking is what I like to call Obsessive Space Marine Syndrome and leads to a lack of variety in units fielded. Remember that variety = good.
As is, the Styx could probably be altered a bit, admittedly. 20-30 points cheaper or so, but then we're splitting hairs. Falling into this trap is a byproduct of other GW games; remember, fleet composition is not as important in BFG as it is in 40k or other games, so don't fret over whether a ship is mathematically worth its cost or something. Just be adventurous and have fun. You'll find out what you like most, and can build your fleet from there.
My answer is simple. If I'm only taking one carrier in my Chaos fleet or its a smaller game - say, under 1500 points, I'll take the Styx. If I'm taking two or the game is over 1500 points, I pony up for 2 Devastations.
