Welcome to Librarium Online!
Though a fantasy/40K veteran i have recently become interested in BFG. Below is a 1000 point list that i have knocked up and are willing to hear peoples opinions. (BTW, i am using the living rulebook and so am restricted in regards to newer ship releases.)
Mars Class Cruiser
Lunar Class Cruiser
Lunar Class Cruiser
Tyrant Class Cruiser
3x Sword Frigates
Fleet admiral with re-roll
I was torn between an overlord and a mars, though i choose the mars because i have heard people bag the overlord. Was looking to include a dauntless (speed and powerful lance) though i couldn't fit it. I have also heard people recommend cobras though i was drawn to the swords.
Comments welcome, thanks in advance.
Welcome to the fold.
Damn fine list too (what is it with all of you LO BFG newbies nailing your first lists? In other BFG forums I have visited, no one gets a good list together their first try).
Stick with what you have and play a few games, to get a feel for what you like to use, weapons wise. I am a fan of Launch Bays, while other players decry them. Some players like to take more escorts than anything else, and others only take capital ships. There is no right answer, and a fleet can be tailored to fit your tastes. BFG is far more forgiving in its force composition than either WFB or 40k.
If you choose to add to your fleet to bring it up to 1500 points, go with your gut instinct and add some of the ships you listed there. Dauntlesses are very nice, and cheap (plus, great looking models). Cobras too are highly recommended. Just one word of advice: don't let other players opinions talk you out of a ship you really want to try. Of course, its good to ask for varying opinions to get an idea about what the most popular and therefore presumably the most successful ships are, but really, every ship can be successful depending on how you play with it. And that's the thing...you have to develop or learn what your own play style is, then facilitate it.
We discussed this in an earlier thread about the Retribution class battleship. Most players don't like them, but I've seen one play and they actually do quite well. We sort of concluded that the reason a lot of Imperial players don't field them is because we were advised not to while we were just starting. But why did other players suggest against taking it? Because someone else suggested to them that they not take it. Its just a vicious chain that keeps getting passed down, leading to some rather good ships being rarely used. So, if the Overlord, or any other ship that isn't very popular appeals to you (even if its just because of the look of it), take a shot and field one. Test drive it. You might find a hidden gem and perhaps most interestingly, you'll be fielding a ship that few players do. And having rare units that your opponents have never seen before always gives you an edge.
Enjoy your newfound admiralty.
I got pretty much the same list when i started out, i.e a mars, lunar, overlord, gothic, 4 Cobras and 3 Swords. I dont like battleships particularly, so i'm getting 2 dauntless and 3 firstorms, that will make about 1500pts. Maybe then i'll consider a retribution or more escorts.
