Im limited on model selection in my area they did not have the carrier battleship nor any type of escort. I plan on getting some escorts, but not for some time.
What do you guys think? Is this ok I know my main opponent will have chaos and a couple of imperial escorts and one light cruiser that have betrayed the emperor.
Yes, you may want a few escorts just to cover your flanks. Nice pick with the Retribution battleship...far too few players field it, and its a good ship.
You also have nice variety, but I might replace the Dominator with either another Lunar or another Gothic, so you can squadron them up, but if you want to have different classes of ships for variation, I completely understand. Nice pick with the Mars...that balances out the fact that you took a Ret over an Emperor. Use the Mars mostly for screening against enemy bombers and torps. Don't worry about launching too many bombing runs yourself, because your fleet's strength will be in its direct form of confrontation, namely your Retribution, Lunar and Gothic slugging it out up close.
Play some games with the mind of learning from them. Don't expect to win your first few...if you don't, that doesn't mean you should change your list. You have a decent foundation for a good fleet there, so just learn what you want to include in the future.
Oh, and nice names for your ships, especially the "Final Warning"...I like it.
Thanks, Well I can't wait to get some escorts. The stores around here don't carry BFG, but do carry most other popular GW games. I have to have this one store order it for me. About the Dominator I was planning on having it blast with bats then have the Gothic clean up with the lances, kinda like a team...Is this no good?
Yeah, that could work. Where I was coming from is just that most players squadron their similar ships so they can act together, but yours will probably work too.
....Sorry, help me out (brain's a little fuzzy on the BFG front) - does the Dominator have a Nova Cannon? Cause if so, you'll want to keep it a little further out (at least over 30 cm), but for the plan you have it earmarked for, you'll have to get in close.
Oh, and most GW stores don't carry BFG anymore. This doesn't mean its not popular, just less popular than their main games (GW games have sort of exploded in popularity in the last few years). We all have to mail order, so don't feel bad about that. You can also check out some discount websites, if you want. Same product, maybe a slightly longer wait time, but about 25% off. Hillcity Comics is one for the US, Great Canadian Miniatures for Canada.
I have read through some battle reports around the net. I can now see the usefulness of escorts so I do plan on adding some. If I have to go over 1500 I will.
What should I do to keep it at 1500 or less though. Should I add one squad or two? If only one then should they be Swords or Cobras? What ship to take out?
I like the look of both but, the Swords appear to be the logical choice. As far as what ship to take out I'm still not sure. Also my champion Imperial spies found out that my Chaos opponent has two carriers in his fleet and a total of nine ships. 6 cruisers a Imperial Light Cruiser and 2 Firestorms. How should I fight against that?
Swords are kind of the mainstay of the Imperial fleet as far as escorts go, but I prefer Cobras myself. I think they look a little cooler, plus I love unleashing point blank torpedo salvoes into my enemy's ships. The cobras are a little cheaper and thus you get 4 for the price of 3 Swords. As all escorts have only 1 shield and 1 hit, this means the Cobras are just barely more survivable than the Swords. But your choice. If you want to balance out your fleet a bit more with WB's, that's a good idea too.
As far as fighting your Chaos opponent, don't worry about the Firestorms: 2 are too few to make an impact on anything but maybe some of your escorts, so you can ignore them until the end of the battle. Secondly, keep in mind that the Chaos strength is Weapons Batteries and range. He outranges you by a fair amount, so you'll have to close quick to even the odds. He'll likely want to keep his carriers out of the main fighting, instead choosing to launch salvoes of fighters and bombers at you from afar. Force him to move: shell his carriers with your Nova Cannons. Also, I wouldn't bother sending bombers of your own --- use your carriers to provide a fighter screen to intercept enemy bombers and any torpedoes (though, Chaos ships with torpedoes are rare). Two of your primary strengths are your armoured prow and your torpedoes, so close head on with the enemy ships and don't worry about taking some hits, because they will do the least amount of damage that they are going to on your front quarter. Shove those torpedoes down his throat, then come about to unleash your broadsides. But beware, WB heavy cruisers will outgun you, particularly the Murder and Carnage class cruisers. Keep your few escorts on the flank of one of your ships, then bring them up to hammer home some kill shots, like when your cruisers have already collapsed the shields of one of his main ships.
Other than all that, I just have two more pieces of information that you need to consider. First of all, your fleet is very versatile, and I have only listed a few tactics that you could use effectively --- you really can come up with your own battle plans, and that's most of the fun in BFG. The second thing to remember is that all planning goes out the window once those first salvoes are fired, so you'll have to adapt. Prepare, and good luck.
Thanks for all the advice. You are all very helpful.
