Well, there's a bunch of nicely painted BFG ships on an auction site I go to, so I'm considering buying them. I'm hoping there aren't any horrible problems with Eldar in BFG...? Also, can anyone tell me which of these units are duds and which of these are worth buying? Or at least give a priority for how good they are?
1x Void Stalker
2x Shadow Class Cruiser
2x Eclipse Class Cruiser
2x 2 Hellebore Class Frigates
2x 2 Aconite Class Frigates
2x 3 Nightshade Class Destroyers
2x 3 Hemlock Class Destroyer
That seems to be a fairly solid fleet - good mix of cruisers & escorts and all that. I'm not too familiar with the Eldar, so you might want to wait for a second opinion on that part.
As for the Eldar in general, there's nothing wrong with them. In fact, you'll likely even get some cries of "cheese!" when playing as them. See, unlike most fleets in BFG, which move once at the beginning of the turn, Eldar get to move twice (once at the beginning and once near the end). This effectively allows them to fly in, shoot, and fly away again before the enemy can shoot back. But before you think that this is the greatest thing ever, remember that Eldar are extremely fragile - where Imperial cruisers have 8 hits, for example, Eldar have 6 & 4, depending on the class. Plus Eldar don't have standard shields, but instead have "holofields" which are basically a saving throw against most damage.
I think that Eldar as a fleet are just fine - some very distinct advantages, but matching disadvantages. They're definitely not broken, and they aren't the cheesiest fleet in the game by far (*cough*necrons*cough).
Plus, BFG is, in my opinion, the single greatest game that Games Workshop has EVER made. Go for it!
I've just got an Eldar fleet for BFG as a total noob to the game.
One thing that was pointed out to me was that hellebores aren't that good - You can get more escorts with more hit points for the same points. Your guns are a little more spread out that way, so fewer eggs in baskets.
Having an army and not owning a rulebook is like owning a car with no steering wheel.Originally Posted by amishcellphone
Yeah, I was thinking I might try to stick to the lighter vessels primarily. The Void Stalker I'm going to get solely because I like the fluff for them and the guy seems to have painted his quite excellently. It also makes a nice showy flagship for the fleet, even if I never use it in-game. Tips like that on the Hellebore are very useful though, since I don't have *that* much money to invest in a game that nobody else I know plays currently and I don't really want to buy the whole force.
Hellebores are worthless, since for 5 more points, you can get the same weaponry, but twice the survivability (a nightshade, and a hemlock). Other than that, it looks good.
