    Depends on your fighting style.

I would recommend of the main three.

The Imperial Fleet has a bias toward firepower and armour, with a lack of speed. Basically they are a slowly moving fist that will crush all opposition.

The Chaos Fleet are old Imperial ships, so they have good armour, but prefer long range firepower to the amount of torpedoes put out by Imperial ships. Good for swamping the enemy with bombers due to several fleet carriers.

The Eldar Fleet are very fast and fragile, but can do a horrendous amount of damage. They rely on their technology to get around their relatively lowly armour save of 4+ (means that hits only count to "wound" ships on 4,5,6). They are very maneuverable also, turning to any heading when most other races are usually limited to maybe a 45 degree turn from their present heading.

Anyone want to quickly sum up the tyranids, orks and necrons? I havent played either as them or against them to know their fighting style.

To be honest, I dont, yet. Im not even sure which one I'll be pestering my parents to get me for christmas.

The Tau from what I read are overpriced and underpowered, definitely not for the begginer to play.

so if tau arent that good then it might have to be imperial for me. i wanted a shooty one.

i would have liked tau but if they are underpowered then i doubt i could use them. oh well i will prob end up getting an ig army in 40k to go with my fleet.

There arent a load of accompanying fleets for armies in 40k.

They're just Imperial Navy, not Imperial Guard.

And I might be doing a pre-heresy imperial fleet which uses chaos ships..

what i mean by my fleet to go with my 40k one is i will be making a campaign soon and it will be BFG and 40k so you need to have a fleet and an army that is the same race.

    Ah, I see.

Orks arent bad ( You do collect them ,right?) but their gunfire varies a lot in terms of strength values per turn.

    *****?

i used to have orks and i have been offered some cheaply so i was looking at going back into them but i doubt i will.

my main fighting style is shooting and that is why i like ig and tau. but at my local gaming club the most played army is ig with like 1 in 5 people playing them. so i thought i would be different (no-one there has tau) but from what you say the tau seem rubbish. arent all armies/fleets were meant to be equal?

the money side of it doesnt bother me that much as it will still be cheaper than 40k.

Technically they are supposed to be equal, but in practice they arent. Im not really for Tau, since they dont have the same feel as they do in 40k.

And believe me, when you have to pay out £15 per capital ship for tau, you will be really hurting for money.
