I have my first proxy game of Eldar lined up against a friend, who uses chaos ships. Currently on my list (2000pts) I have something of the order of 20 Hemlocks in order to batter my friend into submission.

This, however, is besides the point.

I was thinking about Jason and his fleet, and what they had undertaken in the past, which got me thinking about the idea of doing a Pre-Heresy Imperial fleet, using the chaos ships.

    The reasons for this are:

    1) Its very fluffy, which is a must for me as I move into my eighth year as a hobbyist in the GW realm.

    2) Its unusual. I'd be willing to bet that no one else in at least Devon has done this.

    3) Its cheaper than it would be if I went for Eldar. £9 for a single ship that costs maybe 250pts in the case of an Eclipse or £9 for two chaos ships which together would easily be in excess of 400 pts, a whole fifth of the pts limit my friend and I are playing.

What do you think of the idea? Comments appreciated.

Pre-heresy fleets are pretty cool, but youp robably won't get to use it in tournaments. If you do make sure you've got plenty of ships from the chaos half of the list, they're much better and a lot cheaper (in points). You should have some imperial cruisers for the torps, but I'd go for the 400pts chaos battleship. It can wreck a cruiser or escort squad and still launch EIGHT attack craft wings!

Hope this helps, and where did you get your avatar picture?

I find the title "Benevolent Dictator" beneath a portrait of Iosef Stalin ironic in the extreme.

SOunds fluffy. Theres an imperial ship that has the imperial front scoop but the chaos back, so i guess chaos ships are pre heresy. You might have to convert them to not look evil, though, and you can't use the planet killer, which sucks.

You'd have to lose some stuff, but you could add Emperor Class Battleships (Pre-Heresy). That would be cool. They should look nice too!

I like that idea very good. And its not like the chaos ships need too much remodeling as they are essentialy just imperial ships in a different colour scheme.

Make sure you get a desolator as they are very much worth the points.

PS what colour scheme are you thinking of using.

You could even covert them to a mix of ships. The images of pre-hersey ships are vague at best.

Hey, I had this same idea, but I never undertook it in the end (as it happens, I live in Devon too - small world. So at least one other person has had the idea in Devon).

In the end I decided it would be fun, but to be honest, I decided it would basicaly be a Chaos fleet that obeyed Imperial rules (such as Admirals, re-rolls, capaign rules etc.) as almost all of the Imperial fleet we know to day (with the armoured prow) is post-heresy. So any pre-heresy fleet would be a Chaos fleet with a few ships taken out.

I would remove the planet killer and blackstone (for obvious reasons), and perhaps also the Despoiler (if you read the Battlefleet Bakka article in 2002 you will see why). Also, I decided that all veriants of the vengeance, both imperial and Chaos should be included.

I never took the idea very far, 'cause it seemed more of an idea for an Imperial fan that likes Chaos ships, whereas I like Imperial ships, and would only make a pre-heresy fleet if I came accross alot of money!!

Sounds an excelent idea though, I'd like to know how you do with it, + see your ships. I think there is a great potential for conversion.

Yep, the despoilers are copies of the Terminus Est (my favourite scifi battleship ever), created in M36.

However, according to the Imperial Fists IA article the Sword Of Sacriledge, on which Rogal Dorn apparently died during a boarding action no more than one millennium after the heresy, was a despoiler class battleship.

That could mean that the forces of chaos have made their own copies of the Terminus Est pattern, which is known to have been an originally unique design.
