Tackling the painting aspect of BFG is something I haven't done yet, my fleets have been 'grey armies of doom' so far. I have no idea how to go about painting them..
For the Imperial fleets, are there fluff colours and different 'chapter' schemes I should be looking at? Or is it FFA in space? How have others gone about painting Imperial ships?
Hmm...I smell an article...sniff sniff
My ships are fairly bog standard. The cruisers and escorts are grey, with different coloured bands and prows. I have one black sword squadron, they look nasty ! My flagship is supposed to be very old, it's a 'Ret. So I painted it worn out brown colours.
SM fleets would probably be grey or white, with flecks and areas of the chapter colour. I don't think that all Ultramarine vessels would be blue, just wouldn't suit IMO.
Really, I would suggest researching naval colour schemes of WW2 ships. That is pretty much what they are based on anyway.
Hmm yes a painting article would be a good idea. Maybe if I get into it, I'll try contributing to such an article.
Good idea to look for WW2 ships. Though, aren't most of them grey? I quite like the GW green, just not too fond of the white prows.
I think my fleet would either be blue or green mostly, just because I like those colours and don't want them looking too dark or evil. Though I'm open to suggestions..
A quick google image search produced ships (sea faring ones) that are grey above the sealine, and red below. Perhaps I could try painting the underside of my ships a different colour to the top..
i personally tried to do something a bit different with my imperial fleet by making them metalic blue. (ie 1 coat of chainmail washed with a heavy blue ink) the effect its self looks good and does not take too much effort (which is a big plus on my part.) i also paint my ships prows to link with my squadrons when i pull them out of the box. :yes:

[16:20] <@Kaiser-> I know he is.
[16:20] <@Kaiser-> He usually is.
[16:20] <@Kaiser-> Sometimes it's intentional.
[00:01] <+zubus> i love you, ya skirt wearin nothern monkey! ^_^
Most of the SM fleets I've seen seem to feature a lot of SW gray, or are just heavy into the chapter colors.
The IN fleets are probably going to be pretty different depending on the area you're from. Gothic sector is green, but Armageddon has that desert color scheme... I'd imagine it's pretty much FFA. I've seen everything from yellow and black to blue and white in the Big Blue Book's painting section. I copied the quick painting guide and ended up with white ships with Regal Blue prows and Bolt Gun Metal trim.
