My themed fleet goes like this:
A planet was being attacked by nids so the population, PDF, everyone escaped using every ship they could find, armed or not and suffered massive casulties breaking through the nid blockade. They barely escaped and were left with many crippled or badly dammaged hulls.
They adapted to life on the run and increesed the sise of their fleet with wrecks and abandoned or drifting hulks. They repaired them as best they could, adding both armed and unarmed hulls to their fleet.
Now, my question is: What do you think would be a good sise (points or models) for the starting fleet. Also, what should make up that fleet so that it is still themed, yet could still survive a standard battle.
Finnally, how should i add to my fleet so that it is still within the theme, (I don't think imperial authorities will allow an emporour class to just lie drifting waiting for someone to salvage it).
Anyway, id like your thoughts on this.
hmm an interesting idea. the thing is that the one fleet that would probebly fit that is the ork fleet. their ships being 100% salveged in general and having a nak to going fast (full speed ahead without special orders)
spambot kill tally: 79

[16:20] <@Kaiser-> He usually is.

personally I think I'd use the rogue trader fleet. Though not used as often as many of the other fleets its designed to represent "independents" throughout the galaxy, be they traders, rogues or otherwise. Seems like a text-book case to me anyway. But whatever you want to use is cool.
It's Battlestar Imperica! I like the theme, but I don't know how long they'd be trapped out there. The Imperium's a large place, plenty of room for folks to spread out and settle down. I'd go with the Rogue Trader idea... Theme the list around a heretic fleet, maybe... They're not worshippers of Chaos, but they don't agree with the Imperial ideals (or lack thereof).

I like the idea of rogue fleet and heretics especially but how wouled they break through any good sized nid fleet? oh wait they probably wouldn't... on their own that is... I think you could get away with taking two or three Vengeance grand cruisers (or their variants) and use their high battery and lance stats to explain how fleet blasted through the nids. After all the vengeance class in particular was mothballed and put on reserve or patrol duty, it would explain where the ships came from. Also you could say that the fleet had a lunar class cruiser as they are really common. if you wanted a really themed fleet include eldar escorts and say that the Lunar class is the one which was destroyed when Admiral Mourndarke destroyed the pirate menace. (the basic premise being that eldar joined the fleet and then slowly drowned the peaceful citizens out until they joined up with other pirate bands ot form the Pirates confederation. It could be fun to morph your fleet from leaving the planet to the eventual fight against the imperial navy.
Yeh, funny you mentioned the eldar, i was actually considering including them as allies. My theme goes that :
The imperial fleet planned to bust out when the nids had just entred the system. they called out for any ship to aid them and the eldar busted a hole in the fleet for them to escape through.
They promesed to repay the eldar some day, and the eldar left them to their own devices.
They took salvaged ship hulls and sought the aid of a "stronghold" ship to help them patch up the broken wrecks. The fleet seeks the nids all over the galaxy, occasionly getting backup from the eldar.
Im thinking of a converted and battle-damaged look for the ships.
what kind of origonal points value do you think, also, thanks for knowlege of "older" ships, these would work well as converted wrecks and salvaged hulls. wha other ships are suitable as wrecks?
Chaos ships are available to the Imperial Fleet as reserves, remember they were ALL Imperial at one time, outside of the Planet Killer. Your planet could have been a "boneyard" type operation, where old ships were mothballed for future use, spare parts, or eventual de-commissioning/scrap. The populace grabbed whatever worked to escape in.
Hmm... They could be civilians, maybe... Not even Navy personnel. They would be hunted by the Imperium for having such a large amount of equipment without a Trade Warrant, thus, unable to settle down on an Imperial world. The Imperium might even consider their taking the ships theft... Tyranids wouldn't have destroyed the hulks, after all, they would have just killed the planet, so... technically they'd still be Imperial property. Travelling from shadowport to shadowport on the run, being pursued by everyone but pirates and other folks who look askance at the law.

Would be good, only problem is that any mothball "boneyard " planet would still have a largish imperial contingent and that could screw things up. Also if they are all old or reserve ships then there would definitely be a Adeptus Mechanicus MAJOR station in the system (The reason for this would be the need to research and strip the better weapons sytems from the old ships.) In addition the majority of the old imperial ships (i.e. the type which chaos has) were only produced in small number or deserted in large numbers. It could work but it would be more accurate to the theme to do the original suggestion.Originally Posted by Rogoth
As for old ships... check the fiction if you see evidence that it could be a reserve ship then use it if you wish but I'd suggest taking mostly escorts with a few large capital ships to preseve the flavor of your fleet.
Hi again. I was just looking over the ship details in Armada (to cleanse the stars) and found the perfect ships for you; its the Exorcist class grand Cruiser. "The Exorcist class was originally
developed as a long range patrol
vessel, capable of self sufficiency for long
periods of time away from fleet support.
Usually operating with two or three
squadrons of escorts, Exorcists were often
posted to the far-flung corners of the
Imperium to patrol the edges of the
Eastern Fringe and into the galactic halo.
Down the years the Exorcist has gradually
been replaced by later ship designs,
especially the Mars class. Some Exorcists
were kept on by fleets on the fringes of the
Imperium to plough the long lonely patrol
routes into the halo. Many Exorcists were
used as colonial transports. The entire
penal colony of Brandt 764 was moved en
masse by Exorcist grand cruisers to
populate and work Tor Alpha, a world
beyond the Eastern Fringe, discovered by
(and named after) the famous Rogue
Trader Foulway Tor. The Exorcist
squadron, led by the Light of Ascension
was then used as convoy escorts for the
ore transports returning to the Imperium,
and played a major part in the defence of
the system when it was attacked and
eventually overrun by a Tyranid hive fleet."
There is the perfect theme for you. later.
I'm not sure if this was mentioned as I have not had the time to read the whole article, but perhaps these people could have been integrated into the tau empire. If you still want an Imperial ship or two I believe rogue traders can ally up with tau.
Just an idea,
