I posted this in the Pirate's Haven but I think it deserved a post here as well. I ahve added and changed little here and there, generally improving it.
I wanted to share this 'little' story (around 1600 words :rolleyes that I wrote up as a piece of fluff for a guy's Catachan regiment.
Havn't thinked of a name for it yet, any suggestions are welcommed.
Oh, and please point out any grammar/spelling-errors so that I can improve in the English language.
Captain Varus stood on the bridge of his ship, the Judgement of Gods, Overlord battlecruiser in the Emperors blessed fleet that orbited the deathworld of Fennus Prime.
They had battled the Tyranid swarm for hours without pause and he could see the weariness in his crews' eyes. But he could also see the unquenchable hate against the Xeno-filth in those eyes as well and he knew that it would lead them to victory, even if it would take them to the side of the Golden Throne.
"We are reciving orders from Admiral Marock, Captain. He wants us to move to point fortythree-oh-fifty and engage the assault creatures moving in there." said his aide, *insert-fleet-rank here* (not good at those) Amril.
"fortythree-oh-fifty..." mumbled Varus as he gazed on his tactical display in front of him. "Bring us head-on and take us there, standard combat speed."
"Aye aye, captain." answered Amril. "Orders sent, bringing us to bear on fortythree-oh-fifty right now."
The point was marked with a green dot on Varus screen, seeing the number that indicated kilometeres from it decreasing quickly. Red dots showing the Tyranid assault beasts was also marked out and were closing fast. Erbus Squadron, a squad of three Sword class frigates, were already engaging the creatures but there where simply to many of them for the frigates to destroy.
"Port weapon batteries are in range, captian. Shall we engage?"
Even being many tens of thousands kilometeres away from point fortythree-oh-fifty, the Overlords long-range batteries were ready to engage the Tyranids.
"Make it so."
"Aye aye, engaging." responded Amril and pushed the correct buttons to deliver all the necessary targeting-data to the firing-stations."Orders confirmed. Weapons firing, captain."
Varus looked out through the bridge's window and he could see the weapon batteries positioned across almost the entire port of the ship firing on a foe only their instruments could see at such a range. The massive shockwaves could be felt through the entire ship and on his tactical display Varus could see some of the red dots flicker and go out as two of the creatures were destroyed by the massive bombardment.
"Reload the batteries and keep firing. We are two thousand kilometeres from fortythree-oh-fifty. When we reach I want you to burn the retros and swing our front up so we are facing the enemy head-on." Varus didn't even look at Amril as he talked, knowing well that he knew exaclty what to do without him checking. Amril was a big boy now, thought Varus.
Shortly ater they reached their destination and after a short communicaution with Erbus Squadron it was decided that they would advance on the Tyranid fleet-line. The assault creatures were eradicated now, their inferior exo-skeleton nothing compared to the full firepower of the Judgement of Gods.
Admiral Marock had dispatched a Dominator class cruiser, The Hammer, to assist them and it's nova cannon would surely be of much use.
The 5 vessels had established a spear-formation with the Judgement of Gods in the middle, Erbus squadron to it's left and The Hammer to it's right.
They were to move in to forty thousnad kilometeres of the main Hive Ship, a massive Leviathan class, and support the cruisers The Anvil, The Hammer's sister-ship, and the Lord of War, a Lunar class, who were racing away from the Tyranids.
As they closed in, Varus could see to his dispair that both ships were crowded with smaller Tyranid vessels, slowly ripping them apart.
"No!!" screamed Varus as he saw the The Anvil being cleaved in two by the Tyranid ships and the blue icon identifying it on his display disappeared. The Anvil was undone.
A vox-message was now coming in from the Lord of War but much of it was broken down by static.
"Tyra... rding creatures are... ll over the ship..." A loud explosion could be heard in the background along the distinctive sound of weapon discharges. "... can't hold them, get your... en out of he... are self-destroying..."
Terror filled the bridge-staff of the Judgement of Gods as they heard the message.
"Captain, I am detecting a huge concentration of plasma in their engines! They are overloading the plasma turbines!" screamed Amril, panic filling his voice.
"Slow us down! Full power to the retro-thrusters!" Varus opend his vox-channel and the sound of his voice was audible across the entire vessel, "Full retro! All personal, breach yourself!"
As the powerful retro-thrusters kicked in the entire ship rumbled by the sudden decrease in speed and those who didn't hang on to something were thrown around like leafs in a storm. Many cries for medics could be heard in the ship as those unfortunate not to get hold on something hard had been hurt.
The vessels, the others in the squad of crusiers and frigates had performed the same action, had only began to slow in as the Lord of War detonated, killing many hundreds of Tyranids and shaking the world of the other ships again.
As the crew retruned to their normal duties, somewhat dissoriented, Varus could see the wreck of the Lord of War burning with plasma-flames ahead of his vessel and he could also see something that lifted his spirits, a hole in the Tyranid's defense.
Knowing this to be a one-in-a-million oppurtunity, Varus quickly began to forming a plan.
"All power to the engines! take us through that hole in the xenos defense! We will strike their home now."
"But captain, that would be our de-." Amril began to say.
"Be quiet! This is the only chance we will get, we must take it. Our debt to the Emperor will be repaid and we will join Him at His side on Terra. Now do it, and open up a channel to The Hammer and Erbus squadron."
"A-aye aye, captian" Amril's voice was shaking and Varus could see that he was very nervous. "Channel open, captain."
"The Hammer, Erbus squadron, this is Captain Varus of the Judgement of Gods. Do you read me?"
"Aye" both answered quickly. Captain LarRovel of The Hammer continued. "What are you doing, Varus? I can see that you are directing all power to the engines."
"We're going through that hole in the defenses that the Lord of War, blessed be their souls, opened up. We are hitting that Hive Ship."
"That's suicide!" cried LaRovel. "You will never make it past the defenses!"
"I know." answered Varus coldly. "That's why I need you to cover me. Make sure that we make it through and we might end this in a happy way."
"But you will never make it ba-" LaRovel didn't even have timne to finish before Varus intreupted him.
"Look, we only got one chance at this. Either we do it and might even cripple that Hive Ship or we don't and then we will all die. I have already began to advance so the decision is made. Either you will assist me and we might make it or you don't and then, well, we're truely dead." Varus was as serious as he had ever been. That couldn't be denied.
"Then it will be done. The Hammer and Erbus squadron will assist you. Emepror bless you, you have to make it now!" LaRovel's voice was now filled with faith and strength, much of it awe for his fellow captain.
Varus closed the channel and directed his attention to Amril again. "We have the support of our comrades, Emperor bless their strength. How are we progressing?"
"The Hive Ship is aproximaly thirty thousand kilometers away. Shields and the hull are at one-hundred percent and the engines is giving us everything. We are advancing fast." Amril was now sitting straight in his chair with focus and strength filling the air around him. One of the finest sailors Varus had ever met, without doubt. To bad it would end like this.
"Excellent." Varus answered and he could now see the guns of The Hammer and Erbus squadron open up on the Tyranid defense-creatures. The Hammer's nova cannon fired, sending many dozens of the beasts to their deaths and the shockwave could be felt in the entire ship. "I'm going to adress the entire crew now." A last speech, Varus thought.
Pushing a button and positioning the vox-horn in a better position, Varus adressed the entire crew of the Judgement of Gods. "Sailors of the Imperial Navy! This is your captain speaking a last speech since all of you must be aware of what is going on right now. In the void around Fennus Prime we have fought the xeno filth. I have lost count on how many we have destroyed but they still keep coming, surley they must have a urge to die as they throw themselves upon our magnificient ships! And we have answered that urge with what they deserve, death! Still they kept coming and it have resulted in the tragic loss of our comrades. But we have been given the chance to avenge them! As I speak we are racing through the defenses of the xenoes and our allies are clearing a way for us to their mothership! The Emperor gave us the oppurtunity to destroy the filth, only requiring our mortal bodies, something I know all of you would willingly give up for the chance to stand with the Emperor in His palace on Terra!
It is thus that I ask you to follow me into the darkness and purge our enemies. Now sing with me, let the tones of The Imperial Hymn fill our lungs as we gladly throw ourselves at the foe!"
As soon as the Judgement of Gods came close to the Hive Ship it was engaged. Mindless spores and smaller creatures without any sense of self-preservation hurled themselves at the battlecruiser. Larger escort-sized vessels closed in and begun firing sprays of pyro-acid that burnt its hull. Erbus squadron made short work of them as massive hails of gun-fire were unleashed upon the Tyranids. A Sword frigate in the squad was engulfed by a particulary large salvoe of green bio-plasma fired by a closing Tyranid cruiser and was cut in two as the plasma burnt through the hull.
The Hammer swung around and unleashed it's full broadside against the oncoming cruiser and the Lance-turrets on the Judgement of Gods added with its firepower, cutting deep wounds in the cruiser with blue-white beams of laser and destroying it.
The Hammer and Erbus squadron halted in their advance as they reached the point were they couldn't continue without endangering themselves. With renewed power the Judgement of Gods continued towards the Hive Ship and a glorieous death.
Captain LaRovel heared the speech over the vox. It filled him with awe to hear the voices of four thousand sailors sing The Imperial Hymn. Him and his ship could not longer support the advance of their comrades and they pulled back and watched. Guns blazing, the Judgement of Gods raced straight on at the Hive Ship and tearing up many deep wounds in it. As they became enveloped in defense-creatures Varus rammed his vessel at full speed in to the side of the ship and overloaded the plasma engines. A huge blue-white bubble expanded from the side of the Hive Ship for a couple of seconds and teared a huge hole in it. The voices on the vox died out with the explosion and nothing remained of the Judgement of Gods, only a deep wound in the Hive Ship showing their ultimate sacrifice. The massive Hive Ship began slowly to fall in to the atmosphere of Fennus Prime as its organic stabilisors stopped to work.
The Judgement of Gods had succeded.

I think you meant gazed."fortythree-oh-fifty..." mumbled Varus as he gaced on his tactical display in front of him. "Bring us head-on and take us there, standard combat speed."Correct me of I'm wrong someone, but I thought the ship board guns had ranges or hundreds of thousands of km.Even being many thousands of kilometeres away from point fortythree-oh-fifty, the Overlords long-range batteries were ready to engage the Tyranids.Reload."Relod the batteries and keep firing. We are two thousand kilometeres from fortythree-oh-fifty. When we reach I want you to burn the retros and swing our front up so we are facing the enemy head-on."Thousand.They were to move in to forty thousnad kilometeres of the main Hive Ship, a massive Leviathan class, and support the cruisers The Anvil, The Hammer's sister-ship, and the Lord of War, a Lunar class, who were racing away from the Tyranids.Screamed."No!!" scremaed Varus as he saw the The Anvil being cleaved in two by the Tyranid ships and the blue icon identifying it on his display disappeared. The Anvil was undone. Not so much a spelling mistake, but as opposed to "you could hear", maybe "the sound of his voice was audible" or something to that effect."Slow us down! Full power to the retro-thrusters!" Varus opend his vox-channel and over the entire ship you could hear his voice saying, "Full retro! All personal, breach yourself!"Answered.Aye" both asnwered quickly. Captain LarRovel of The Hammer continued. "What are you doing, Varus? I can see that you are directing all power to the engines."
But awesome! I really loved the story, and I found it very interesting. A nice touch with the sacrificing of the ship at the end with the Imperial Hymn- that's heroics from the legends of old!
quick edit- I must say, thinking about it, I think the rest of the BFG fiction that I've read tends to be against Chaos or Orks. I believe that this is the first piece of fiction against tyranids that I have read, so Kudos! It makes an interesting change.
Although, with that point, maybe you could have focused on the Tyranid weapons a bit more. Just a thought.

It's kind of fun how many spelling-mistakes you do when you 'aint thinking about it... I blame my word for not having an English spelling-correction installed and that I push the buttons on my keyboard to quickly (9/10 the becomes teh...).
Thanks for the feedback though!
I think I didn't include any Tyranid weapons becuase I couldn't fit them in a good place without extending the story to much. It is already over 1600 words.
Also I wrote this all up in one go (took me 1.5 hours) so I guess I kind of forgot about certain things in the process of writing it. But I might ad a section or something in the future, we'll see.
I have updated the story towards the end. Thanks for the feedback.
