I've been thinking about getting into BFG. I love the "fluff" and the idea of giant ship battles. The problem is that after thinking about it a bit and looking at some battle reports I'm just not so sure how much room there really is for tactics and how much difference there will be from one game to the next especially against the same opponent.

I agree with you about the fluff and idea of BFG - they are amazing. With regards to tactics, they are perhaps one of the most important things in-game:
Whilst lots of other games rely quite heavily on choosing the right list for the fight, BFG instead requires you to use your ships correctly on the table. As such, the same fleet played by two different people could end up having very different results. The fluidity of the game (the ships keep moving whether you want them to or not) and the strengths and weaknesses of each fleet force you to think tactically in order to win. You cannot just wander over to the enemy fleet and shoot, you need to think about concentrating fire, outmaneuvering and outshooting the enemy (not as easy as it sounds).
The shooting rules reinforce tactical thinking as a vital part of the game. As the efficiency of your shooting often varies depending on your bearing to the enemy, you need to position your ships correctly to get the most out of them. This, combined with the special orders system, interesting celestial phenomenon (BFG terrain) and lots of other things make BFG an incredibly varied and interesting game to play.
You will find that as you and your opponent play, you will attempt new tactics in order to gain the upper hand in a game - so even if you only play against one person your games will never be too similar
Have a look at the rule book (its free on the specialist games website) and you will see what I mean. Also have a look at the awesome model range BFG has; they look cool and are much cheaper to collect than other GW games. Tactically the movement is actually more similar to Warhammer Fantasy than the 40K that its based on, and it provides a welcome breath of fresh air to people who are looking at expanding thier gaming experience whilst still maintaining the fluff of their original game system. The ability to link 40k and BFG also provides variety beyond the tactics on the board, with expansive campaigns being supplemented with an extra dimension of inter-planetary conflict and off world interferance, for example, my friend and I use 40k to represent ship to ship boarding actions where the end boarding value represents how many points our boarding force is (a boarding value of 6 is a 600 points 40k list), and planetary combat can be assisted by Orbital strikes (using rules from the Witch Hunter Codex).
Basically the Variety of BFG isn't only in the game itself but the way it can add Variety to your old 40K armies.
There's not alot I can add to what's been said (all quility stuff.) But what I will say is that you truly get a staggering sense of scale and epicism in BFG. Its alot more like your favourite movie battles than 40K perhaps.
Give it a try, its the best value for money game GW do.
One thing to remember with BFG battle reports, is how difficult it can be to write and visualize so much movement without having seen the game played. Things move VERY fast in a turn compared to 40k... And you can be paying for a mistake for quite a while to come. It can be hard to keep it all straight until you've played a game and seen how fluid the rules are, how fast things can go and how quickly they can go wrong.
If you've found that the BFG games you've read about seem similar... Think about the last time you read about Tau or SM in 40k. Battle suits J-S-J, marker lights flash, SM's attempt to close as quickly as possible, jet bikes streak up the board... It really doesn't describe the game in all it's glory unless you're a competent player who can visualize what's happening, not just read about it.
In short... All the games of IG vs. Necrons I've played pretty much came out the same. Necrons marched up and chewed up the IG, each time IG re-working it's list to try to roll more dice on the table. The games of Imperial Navy vs Chaos... Went 50-50, both players recognizing points where tactical decisions changed the outcome at certain points.
If you think there are tactics in 40k, where tactics is really a function of the list you bring... Then you've never played BFG, where tactics are all in the way you maneuver your fleet and remember where you'll need to be to deliver your broadsides in three turns, while ducking your opponents torpedoes... choosing to fire torps early and re-load ordnance or hold fire till you see the whites of their eyes... Can you imagine IG holding fire till they saw the whites of their eyes? The game would be pretty much decided, wouldn't it? IN can do that, or choose not to. Or flood the board with ordnance... It's all in the admiral and how he commands. And I've done all those with the same 1500 pt. fleet on the board.
