chaos ships imperial sailors:am i taking it too far?

well i was studying the fleets and it appears that the chaos ships are more suited to my needs than those of the imperium. so i was wondering if i could get away with having chaos ships (which are old imperium ships anyway) under the comand of the emporer. (mebbe ill write a little story of how a battlegroup was lost in the warp for 10,000 years)

Thing to rememeber is that the bulk of the ships in the chaos lists are either out of commision because better designs are in use, or because they were constructed in such limited quantitites that the only ones available are already employted by chaos forces. (I believe ships like the Acheron and Despoiler battleship fall under the second catagory.)

It is an interesting point that not all chaos ships were at one time imperial which creates an odd fluff situation of having to determine what vessels a fleet of this type would actually have. You could, of course, always ignore this, but it would take alot away from the feel of the fleet.

i was thinking of having a mix of both so id have mebbe the capital ships as they are more expensive (styx and the grand crusier) and then the escorts for the IN. basicly i like the look of chaos in the void but the imperium is alot better for me on land.

but what do you guys think about a backwater world where the local naval forces use outdated equipent (chaos ships)??

I personally don't like the idea of mixing the fleets in the way you are suggesting. If you want to use Chaos ships in an Imperial fleet then you can use the rules in the "to cleanse the stars" pdf on the specialist games website. These rules allow you to use some Chaos cruisers in Imperial Bastion Fleets. What you are suggesting (i.e. using Chaos cruisers and Imperial escorts) would be similar to saying in 40K "I like the Hammerhead, I'll use one in my SM army," and I don't think people would be too happy with it.

Alternatively you could collect a fleet using the Chaos fleet list but make up fluff for it to be an Imperial fleet. You could give a reason for them using the older ships, and then make up fluffy reasons for the effects of the special Chaos rules (e.g. the mark of Tzeentch gives you and extra re-roll; you could rename this to something like "expert command staff" etc). You would, however, run into the problems the guys above have commented on:

    - Non-Imperial ships. These include the Idolator, Planet Killer, Blackstone Fortress. You could not fluffily include these in your Imperial fleet as they are not of Imperial design.
    - Daemonships. Obviously you could not include daemonships in this Imperial fleet, it would just be silly.
    - Rare ships. For example the Acheron and the Despoiler. There are no longer any of these in service within the Imperium.
    - Corruptable. Some of the ships that Chaos use are considered to be "easily corruptable", so it is often the case that Imperials are unwilling to use them.

If you make up some good fluff reasons you could bypass some of these problems, but things like Daemonships and Chaos-forged ships are a big no-no in the fleet you are suggesting. As Mastershake said, you could ignore some of these restirctions but doing so would detract from the fluffyness of the fleet.

At the end of the day I think it would be better to play as Chaos if you like the Chaos fleet more. What you are suggesting above may be difficult to implement, and mixing the fleets as you suggested is unlikely to be accepted by many opponents. Of course, if you feel you could make it work then go for it and see how you get along; the only 100% sure way to find out is to try. Good luck with whatever you choose to do mate.

    Cheers,
    Rich.

Yeah, like rp252 said, the fleets are designed with balanced capabilities in mind. If you wanted to just take a Chaos list, paint it Imperial gray, and say it's some sort of "touched by the Warp" fleet still loyal to the Emperor, I think most folks would be fine if you just used Chaos rules.

A fleet mixed of Chaos capital ships and Imperial escorts, though, using the capabilities of each ship as written and ignoring any proper fleet list... Sure I'll play you... But my Lunar Class cruisers are now worth, um... 5 points and I want to squadron 25 of them in a 1500 point game...

Once you step outside the balanced fleet list rules your opponent has a right to as well... And then it's not BFG it's guys with models going "bang-bang". :shifty:
