Welcome to Librarium Online!
The local group has just started to get into BFG, and as my most loved force is my Farsight Enclave themed Tau I'm considering ordering in a batch of stuff from the UK. Obviously, as this is going to be rather expensive, I'm wondering if you guys could give me a few pointers?
I'm looking at around 750 points, and won't try to expand from that, so I'd like a force that is fairly able to tackle all-comers. I've borrowed a copy of Armada, and have spent a good while going over the entries, and have decided that it would be most fluffy to take a fleet stocked with older vessels- namely, a single Explorer, several Merchants, a messenger or two, and as many Orcas as possible. What about the forgeworld stuff? Is any of that any good?
Thanks in advance,
I have to tell ya I've seen the Workshop Tau ships up close and they don't impress me very much. Of course the guy who had an 'old' Tau fleet asked me to bring mine into the shop a second time so he bring his camera and photograph them. I like the look of the FW Tau ships but most of the 'long time' players defend the lack of 'sexy' in the old models as keeping in pace with the Tau philosophy.
As far as rules go I've been lucky to have a group of people that don't mind that I play with the Commerce Protection Fleet rules which are not sanctioned by either GW or FW. These guys are like old pros and as much as people complain about the Wardens in the CPF rules with their 30pts and dual forward lances, I've always been left with a pile of smoking/burn ships at the end of every game.
Any more questions?
Well, if you wanted to be fluffy then I see no problem using any of the current GW Tau range, as each ship class has been around for a while. Even the Hero has been around long enough for Farsight to have access to them - be it from his original rebellion to more recent defectors from the greater good. I'm personally not a fan of the look of the GW Tau models, but they are not that bad and could easily be used for what you are suggesting.
The FW models are very nice - IMO much better than the GW stuff. The fluffy problem with using these is that they are meant to be on the cutting edge of Tau technology. This means there are very few of them around and it is unlikely the Ethereals would allow any but their most trusted to crew and command them. You could say that some have very recently defected, but they are still highly unlikely to be available to Tau rebels like Farsight. Apart from this, there is the expense and availability of the rules to think about with the FW stuff. Beautiful models though. Whatever you decide to do I wish you the best of luck. A Farsight Enclave Tau fleet is definately possible
