    500pt Imperial fleet

Decided to go back to my fleet roots and try a new fleet with escorts over only cruisers.

    Dictator class cruiser- Emperors Justice

    Dauntless class cruiser- Relentless

Firestorm class escort (4)- Absolution squadron

    Total: 490

So what do you think of this fleet? I was thinking about swapping the dauntless for four cobras, but then I lose the lances offered by the dauntless.

Hope you don't have to face eldar with this list... But against most other fleets it should do fine.

If you plan on having the Dictator hang back and just pump out ordnance, then get the Cobras for a mass ordnance effect. If you do this, also trade in your firestorms for swords, as then you'd have only few weapons batteries left to knock down shields (ordnance goes right through them), and you'd just be wasting your lance shots downing shields that just come back online next turn..

If you plan on also using your Dictator as a line cruiser, then keep the Dauntless and use them to support each other, with the firestorms as back-up.

SatorMortis, I don;t know about you but you should always try to fire lances last, since they suffer no negative modifiers from things like blast markers and the like. (Weapons batteries are there to drop shields, lances are the things that do the biggest and baddest damage.)

Re-read my post, that was my whole point . If he trades in his dauntless for a Cobra squadron and keeps his Dictator in the back, then he won't won't have any weapons batteries really capable of knocking down enemy shields, thus making his firestorm squadron less effective. He'd then be better off trading them in for 3 swords. EDIT: That's 4 swords of course.

Given the firestorm's range, a squadron four strong probably has enough weapons batteries to knock the shields off a ship they are going after, they most definately have enough firepower to go escort hunting if the need be even if they do not have the speed of some of the other races.

Possibly, but you'd need to be lucky. Four swords have firepower 16 batteries in total, which I think is superior to 4 lances if you don't know whether the enemy's shield will be down or not. In addition, 4 swords are 20 point cheaper, and because he still has 10 unused points this allows him to field an extra Cobra destroyer.

I'm intrigued by the use of the Dictator for Ordnance cover in such a small fleet. I've seen most small fleets leave out attack craft.

Why the Dauntless? What is the tactical role you intend for it that a group of four Cobra's wouldn't provide better?

I'd like to see the strategy intended for the list... But if I had to use it, I'd do this:

Keep the Dictator back and crank out bombers early, reloading asap to crank out Close Air Patrol (CAP) fighters to keep off enemy ordnance. That will keep the enemy busy working on pinging ordnance while the Dauntless and the Firestorms work their way around and past the gunline, firing as they go. Most 500 point fleets will be cruiser heavy for some reason, and the bombers and escorts will be un-molested for maneuverability. Go for the rear, where they can't shoot back.

...About that; I played Dark's raider fleet. He was more escort heavy than I was; however the dauntless was used more because I wanted this fleet to mainly be one larger flagship and a picket ship with several smaller ships making up this force. Lets just say they all aren't making it out to fight another day.

(Before I played Dark's fleet, I thought about adjusting my fleet, swapping Emperor's Justice for two more dauntless's; when he informed me he would be fielding that damn prized devestation of his, that idea went out the window. Nine lance shots never looked like a better idea when we started playing though..)
