I've never played BFG before but a friend of mine has recently convinced me to try it out. I am familiar with the WH40K universe but havn't played any tabletop games in quite a few years. After looking at the models i decided that i liked the look of the Tau ForgeWorld models the most and so this is the race that i think i'll try out.
However, as i am unfamiliar with the rules and have no experience with BFG at all i don't really have any idea what a decent starter fleet would be. After reading the [experimental] Tau FW rules from the FW site i guessed that starting with 1 Custodian, 2 Protectors and 3 Castellan Escorts would be alright but i wanted to check before i go spending money.
I would appreciate any comments or suggestions. For now i don't want any more than 1000 points worth of models, and i'd like to try and keep the price below £50 at first. Then once i've tried a few battles i'll probably expand it based upon my battle experience.
As a final note - the person i'll be playing with is using Chaos. I don't know if that matters at all but i thought a i might as well mention it anyway.
First off, welcome to the forum.
Secondly, I can't really help as I'm not so hot on the Tau fleet rules. But what I will say, is that for 1000 points, I would not include any battleships... despite Battleships smexyness factor, they tend to cost too much for 1000 games.
I would go mainly for some cruisers and escorts. Maybe 50% of each? Or 75% of Cruisers and 25% of escorts.

actually, tau are special. they rely on their battleships for ordnance support, and its actually the cruisers that have limitations in what you can take. id take at least one, maybe two explorer classes in 1000, the rest escorts, maybe light cruisers.
too many, gave up counting. rough estimates of 10% even steven, 25% omg i lostorz! and 65% PWNED NEWBS! ^^
<Tossy> Crons are freaking invincible!
I'm in a similar position to Hiskett, would a balanced fleet be possible by simply buying one (packet) of everything? ie.
1 Custodian - Big Carrier / Battleship
1 Emissary - Big Envoy ship thingy
2 Protectors - Cruisers
3 Castellens - Escort
4 Wardens - Custodian Based Escorts
8 Mantas - Bombers
10 Barracudas - fighters
I'm not sure how that goes points wise, it's not most important at the mo, just wether it makes a balanced / legal fleet
