Welcome to Librarium Online!
I've been toying around with the idea of creating a sports game similar to blood bowl for Warhammer 40K and I'd be interested in hearing some of your thoughts on what I have in mind. Although blood bowl takes a tongue in cheek approach to the Warhammer world I was thinking this game would be a bit more "serious." The game would fit into the current 40K universe and wouldn't require much suspension of general 40K lore while playing.
The general idea is that this is a game played by Space Marine scouts as part of their training. It involves small teams (6 on 6) of scouts from each of the Space Marine chapters that compete against one another for the glory of the chapter. The game would be used as a means of training Space Marines to perform under pressure and would require all manner of concentration, physical skill and ability. Only the finest scouts would receive the honor of being selected to play against teams from other Space Marine chapters. For example you could have an Ultramarine 1st Team playing against a Blood Angel 1st Team in the Great Ultramar Stadium to see whose scouts are the best. The actual tabletop game would be played out used converted SM scout minis (using some BB bitz) on a game board designed specifically for the sport. Players would select their teams based upon the type of strategy they expect to use. I'm currently calling the game "Fuchilario" ("Few-chee-lar-eeo").
I have a bunch more background etc... that I've been working on along with the actual gameplay and rules but I thought I'd post here and get other people's impressions/thoughts at this point. Plus it's late and I need to get some rest
Any additional ideas? Things you'd like to see implemented?
That could be pretty interesting, I am not sure how well BB would go without the comedy though. The thing I love about it is all the random stupid things that could happen. Plus how are you going to make enough variety in the players when they are all essentially scouts to make it interesting?
Would be pretty cool to run it as a campaign along with 40k though, the different scout teams could receive bonuses on win/loss or different aspects of how they play for the 40k game.
Thanks for the feedback.
Two things you mentioned that I didn't think about until you did so.
1. Comedy is a big part of blood bowl, not seriousness.
2. The different factions as teams keep things fresh and more enjoyable.
So taking into account your comments I've "re-invisioned" this into something almost entirely different in the spirit of making things goofy and fun. What about a game that introduces a new 40K race that completely out powers any other race currently in 40K. We'll call them the "Commisshionaars." This new race while completely docile has a penchant for sport. They arrive on the scene in 40K and decide that in order to sort out all this petty bickering among all the 40K races they're going to settle it all according to a sports tournament. Effective immediately all races must stop fighting immediately (crazy I know) and must instead gather teams to compete in this sport. Not competing means risking total annihilation at the hands of the winner. It would be a winner take all type of tournament where the winning team gets to decide what happens to all the other races, at which point the "Commisshionaars" would leave everyone be.
As far as the actual game goes it could be an almost total rehash of Blood Bowl just using special 40K rules. Special weapons, weird game field related events depending on where you're playing (i.e. mines, laser traps, etc...) and crazy heroes or special players for the various factions.
Who wouldn't like to see the Tyranids "Red Eyes" facing off against Ultramarine United? How about the Dark Eldar Pleasuretakers in a match versus the Eldar Storm Spiders?
Thanks again for the feedback strewart, I think this sounds much better and a lot more fun!
It is a good idea i myself toyed with that idea a few years ago but it went into the pile of infinite wisdom known as my desk. I like the scouts from different chapters facing each other, you could run a league with just SM scouts and 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th on the ladder at the end of a season go to another league with mixed races.... i think i might make some SM scout BB players with a heavily armoured star player... good idea keep me posted.
General stuff I'm playing around with.
6 on 6 teams.
1 Goalminder (aka goalie)
Game is played in a similar fashion to blood bowl. Specific rules TBD. Each player would have unique attributes with one player being a "Star Player" and having access to special attributes (i.e. multiple arms, special senses, toughness).
The field that is being played upon is chosen prior to each round. Any faction can play at any arena but each arena will be faction specific. The chosen field faction is important because that determines the random events deck of cards that are used in game.
Game tiles are randomly placed onto the game play area but each player (trading off). If a player moves onto a game tile during a match then a random event card is drawn. An example of a random event card for a tyranid arena might be "A giant oozing blister of sticky ichor explodes affecting all players within 1 square. Players are immediately immobilized for one turn. If one player is holding the ball they immediately fumble and the ball is placed according to the fumble template.
Alternatively it might be too much to create an entire deck of cards for each arena so perhaps a table system could be used. For example a D6 roll would be used to determine the type of event if a player touches a Random Event tile (1. Turnover, 2. Injury, 3. Explosion, 4. Special Play, 5. Player boost... etc...) and then another table to figure out exactly what happens. The events would all be unique to each faction's field. Some events would be beneficial while others harmful so that players wouldn't totally avoid random event tiles.
Everything else could be entirely similar to blood bowl although I'm hoping to speed up the gameplay a bit and have moderately high scoring games (10-20 points per team).
What about the "Squat" faction making a comeback too. Pretty sure GW officially discontinued these guys but I'm sure they'd love the chance to rule the galaxy!
Random event cards are a good idea, the faction field idea is so so playing on a tyranid field that gushes stickiness isn't that great maybe if it was riddled with Spires that make it difficult terrain or something like that and if its orks your facing maybe a field with craters and nice big mushrooms for the reference of orks being spores to begin with. It is a really good idea write up some rules for passing catching and scoring etc etc.
I will admit that the idea of an all scout (or even scout and imperial) ball league sounds pretty cool, but realy I don't think it would work all that well even loosely on the rules. Too serious, not enough variety. I could see it being nothing more than dice. Not really sure how it could be done effectively, though there is probably a way.
I guess your right about the all SM scout and or imperial league i can see it being pretty boring now, and in the imperial team it would have a bit of flavour.... actually alot of flavour with a few Ogryns and or halflings as well as guardsmen... that would be good idea, maybe the rules should be gotten out of the way before we jump ahead of macsomjrr. How is the game played? is it going to be like BloodBowl or or yeah i dunno, just the goal keeper player has thrown me a little please explain.
You guys rock for your comments so far. Really appreciate that.
Couple of points to make.
The game would be similar in style to two previous examples of futuristic football. Speedball (the video game originally created by The Bitmap Bros.) and Battleball (a board game created by Milton Bradley).
I'm including goalies for a couple different reasons. Firstly it mixes things up a bit from Bloodbowl's true American Football design and adds a new element of strategy into the gameplay. Secondly I'm thinking of a tons of cool things that can happen during a single match specifically to a goalie. There is also the possibility of introducing a unique shooting mechanic (i.e. one and two timers, headers, punchers etc...) that takes advantage of different faction/race characteristics. The goalie would be confined to a goalie box protected by a special deflector shield that only allows the ball to pass thru but no players. this would prevent the tyranids simply eating the goalie for example, or perhaps the space orcs from viciously beating him/her to a pulp.
The actual gameplay would be turn based and similar in style to Battleball's movement mechanic. It's going to be as simple as Bloodbowl with some things removed to make it more futuristic.
Speedball and Battleball pics.
In the grim darkness of the far future there is only... sport!
