starting warbands

So i'm thinking of starting a warband for mordheim and I'm just wondering what people usually buy to start theres off (haven't decided on my band yet maybe undead,dwarves,lm (yet to see their rules) or skaven).
Is it a good idea to order the warband boxes off GW because they seem alittle short on needed models or do you guys buy proper unit boxes from the fantasy range then leave the majority of units unmade?
I can see with skaven you could just greenstuff a box of clan rats but undead would require ghouls, dregs (any alternative to the ones in the warband box?) and zombies. Skinks i guess could be converted easily for an all skink warband
Can dregs just be zombies painted with human skin colour and with weapons?

Plastic militia boxes work great for humans, and clan eshin night runners are perfect for skaven. As a matter of fact, both started as Mordheim models before making it into WFB.

For the other warbands, you'll probably have to gather models from different sources. Keep in mind that companies other than GW also make very nice models that can be purchased individually for pretty cheap.
