Bloodbowl rocks

A mate of mine at our local gaming club has decided in his infinite wisdom that Bloodbowl is cool and is going to kick us all until everyone plays it. Within days of his merely mentioning the game there were over 10 people interested in joining a league and a cup knockout competition. I managed to get a team for £16 from ebay and bought a couple of add ons from GW direct.

The way the league works is everyone is allowed 3 pre season friendlies to get some money and star players points moving (and to make sure the teams are a little different at the start of the league) and then kick off.

I have played my 3 games and have absolutely loved them, even people watching other games have been shouting and cheering for touchdowns and players being killed. What I don't get is how Games Workshop can treat such a brilliant game as one of their specialist jobs and not really support it.

Yes, I had my first sampler game the other night at our new games club, and I must admit I am pretty much hooked. Its very well thought out, probably not too expensive in terms of models, and very characterful. What team(s) are you looking to get? I was quite taken with the Chaos Dwarves (with two Bull centaurs) that I was allocated for the trial game.

Well for me being a long time warhammer player I had to go with da boyz, mainly because if you cut me I bleed green :w00t: Orcs are quite cool for a team that can't run, can't throw and can't catch. Pretty good at stamping on things though.

The whole game seems to thrive on the loopier the plays you make and the more often you make go for it rolls always seeming to come off. I suppose there is no such thing as playing safe in bloodbowl.

If I were to look at another team it would have to be dark elves I think, they are pretty quick with good armour and high agility.

As far as purchasing teams it really isn't that bad, ebay has loads on there. If not a starting team box from GW's website costs £25.

Blood Bwol is awesome!
I used to have two teams myself Dwarfs and Humans. I always wanted to go halflings though. Imangine your opponents face when you put out those useless little guys, then you bring out a bunch of treemen blockers! Blood bowl is a great game but i eventually quit because of a lack of players in my area. It's a really fun game to play but after a while your gold is just getting used to replace casualties.

Good luck with your teams!

GO HALFLINGS!

I may go for a gobbo team next, crazy little guys with bombs and chainsaws and loads of trolls.

The league we are starting has 2 conferences of 5, each plays each other twice with the top 2 from each conference going into the semis of the Bloodbowl.

One guy playing wood elves had a treeman and a lineman killed playing chaos in a pre season friendly, not the ideal start to a league.

If you want to really get into it full time. Look at my post on Bloodbowl Online. It's free and you can play pretty much anytime of the day.

I've spent many an hours online playing BB, when I couldn't dig up enough buddies for a good game at home.

I was going to have a look at the bloodbowl online but my PC at work is so old that I think it is gerbil powered.

The handy thing with it at the moment is the league is only just about to start and everyone is keen as beans so getting practice games is easy.

Well I have played my allowed pre-season friendlies and my opening league game is against Dwarves. Rather annoyingly I have never played against them and only seen one game involving them. Does anyone have any advice on how best to go about beating them up?

My orc squad consists of:

4 Blitzers
3 Black orcs
5 Line orcs (2 of these have the skill block from SPP's)
1 Thrower
1 Goblin

Most of my scoring so far has come from the blitzers running down the wide area's of the field.

Any help would be appreciated.

Funny you should say!

I used to play my dwarf team against my brothers orcs a fair bit. Try and have a good score against them. The dwarfs are too slow to really make any suprise moves. Hold a few linesmen back and just storm up one side. Thats what he did to me on numerous occasions. Dwarfs although slow are tough with a good set of armour. Watch out for him putting the troll slayers up against your black orcs as they have some quality advantages.

Nice one taking a goblin!

I took the goblin originally as I wanted a cheerleader and the gobbo was 10,000 less than an orc lineman :w00t: As it turns out the goblin is pretty handy as he moves very fast and no one ever pays any attention to him (until he runs in and fouls you as he is my designated fouler :) ).

I think I will need to be aware that practically his whole team has block and the armour of a tank looks like running blitzers down the line is the way forward. I will post up after the game and let you know how it goes.

Goblins can run threw tackle zones without any negatives (stunty). This gives him two tries (dodge skill) at a 4+ to run threw a zone. Lets say the defense sets up a staggered line on the goal. Hand the ball to the gobbo then he runs right threw them for the score!

Reminder: the Doge skill is usualble only once per turn.

Hint: If you haven't used the dodge skill. I usually pull my Gobbo off the line at the end of my phase. This all depends on whether he needs to put his tackle zone on someone. If you always end the turn with him not adjacent to an opponent then his survivabilty goes waaayyy up. He can only be Blitz'd that way versus a block thrown on him every turn.

I ended up playing my first 2 league games at the weekend (both against separate Dwarf teams), I beat the first one 1-0 which was great. The second game was a sight to behold, I had one of those games here the dice gods hated me with a fiery passion and thought the sun shone out of my opponents bum :)

I came close to scoring first as one of my blitzers gets to the goal line, needs to "go for it" to score as he will get pounded the next turn and rolls a 1 - then proceed to beat his own armour and knock himself out. It was about this point I realised I was going to be lucky to come out of the game with a draw and as much of my team intact as I could. I had a goblin injured and badly concussed and then conceded the touchdown from hell with 2 turns to go. It was a pass from within tackle zones to a catcher with agility 2 also in a tackle zone, the guy catches the ball dodges out and runs over the line. The dice to pull that off was amazing, I could only sit and watch :) The weather was also "sweltering heat" and the Dwarves managed to not roll a single 1 on a dice for any of the drives for any of the team. I was averaging 3 players per drive out with sunstroke.

Then to cap it all as post match events I got another player injured in training and the goblin got arrested and will miss 2 matches. Got Wood Elves next, should be a giggle.

The fact that I still enjoyed a game that went that badly speaks volumes for Bloodbowl and I can't wait for it to be my turn for the heavens to align like that :w00t:

I have decided to go with Humans for my first team, using mainly the rather good plastics you get with the original game. I have found a few useful 'tactica' on the Games Workshop ste itself, and I don't think I will let myself down too badly in the early stages of the League we are looking to run at my new Gaming Club.

I will experiment with the colour scheme for my team, but am tempted to go with bright Orange, and mimic the style of James Caans team in the original Rollerball. Or possibly black like the Mean Machine in The Longest Yard - two stunning movies if you ever catch them on late at night.

Surely its got to be all about the Rollerball colours :)

Humans are a pretty useful team actually, just based on the fact that they are average at most things and don't sacrifice any area to be good in another. I mean they can throw, catch and run as well as hit things. Pretty much an alround team, unlike orcs that just pound stuff.

As an act of ultimate sadness as well, the league sees you play every one else twice (home and away) and I have just ordered an identical second team to paint up in my away colours. Please tell me I need to get out more someone :w00t:

I actually have the original Rollerball on DVD, cost about £3 which is a bargain for such a classic and excellent film.

I thought you guys might be interested in this, it is a mocked up sports page of a newspaper I wrote following the games for the newsletter at the games club, again feel free to tell me off if I am being a saddo :w00t:

Controversy struck the Groinsmackers after their opening weekend of play with 2 back to back home games. The first, a ground out win, saw 2 players sent off withn the opening minutes. The Groinsmackers went on to score late in the first half to secure the points, allegations of match rigging have been strongly denied by both team coaches. Coach Grogslam Dwarfcooker in a post match interview said "Da boyz done good but I is miffed dat Sneaky B'stard got sent off so early on, he as been fouling like a trooper in training and it is sad to see all is ard training spoiled by the ref spotting it". When asked about the second sending off Coach Dwarfcooker responded with "I didn't see nuffing".

The second game saw an absolute slobberknocker, a game that could have gone either way was snatched by a brilliant passing touchdown from the Dwarves. A change in weather saw a sudden heatwave baking the pitch which took its toll on the boys in red, the Dwarves stoically played through with no ill effects. The match also saw Sneaky B'stard (sent off in the previous game) badly injured. Chief Apothecary Dr Hacka Limoff was first to treat the little guy who was stretchered off the pitch unconcious. Dr Limoff's report said "Sneaky got a nasty knock on the back of da ed, so I used a brand new technique where we balanced it out by smacking im in da front of da ed. We was unsure wevver dis ad worked as he spent 2 hours convinced he was a chimpanzee called Jimbo but den seemed to come back to normal".

Further controversy followed Sneaky B'stard the goblin later that evening as he went to a local lapdancing bar with friends. Allegedly after drinking champagne and taking a number of illicit substances he began pole dancing himself and had to be removed by bouncers, this resulted in a fight where a bouncer was bitten squarely in the testicles by the annoyed goblin. Sneaky B'stard was arrested and hauled off by the local militia. Eye witnesses then heard the little guy unleash the following tirade "Don't you ****s know who I ****ing am, put me down or I'll ****ing do you you copper ****" . Sneaky B'stard has subsequently been charged with being drunk and disorderly, affray, assault and resisting arrest. Head coach Grogslam Dwarfcooker was quoted as saying "Well who'd ave funk it, what an eventful start to da season da little guy is avin. Obviously I am sure da judge will realise wot a misunderstanding dere as been ere when e finishes counting da bag of gold e found on is desk". Sneaky B'stard was cautioned and given 2 weeks community service helping halfling orphans, he will be unavailble for the next 2 games.

Couldn't agree more!

I whole heartedly agree with you all, BLOOD BOWL RULES!!!!!!!
I played a season with my Dwarf team called The Brewville Tappers. They were a solid team but I only managed to pull off a couple wins. VERY SLOOOOOW.
The games were frustrating to lose as they averaged 1-0 or 2-1. Accepting the fact that I'm not the best player, I decided to find a way to have even more fun and not mind losing.
Thus, I created Running Scared. They are a team of converted Night Goblins backed up by a couple of nasty River Trolls. I painted them up in orange and blue like the Denver Broncos of the late 80s through the mid 90s. They have yet to get on the pitch.
I'm hoping to get some guys together soon. Thanks for letting me see that there are still others out there who love the game.:w00t:

I had a Halfling Team that went 0 and 12'ish! I had more fun with my Flings' than my Wood Elf team that is currently 18-2-1. lol

I love my orc team so much that I have bought a second identical team and painted them in an away strip :w00t: It is great having a home and away shirt. I am also currently in the process of building a sradium, with an MP3 player in it with crowd noise and intro music .
