Friendly Colors?

Hey guys I just had a question since I am brand new to this game and decided to start giving it a try since its rather cheap and easy to play. I dont have to assemble or paint cards so its easy enough for me

But my question is about color combos. I just bought a booster deck (I think thats what its called) with red and white in it. It seemed like a good combo since white has protection and defense while red has big hitters from what Ive been told.

The thing that I just read though on another site is that the adjacent colors on the little diagram are the ones that compliment each other best. If this is true white and red shouldnt work together. Is this an outdated strategy or should I be looking at coupling red with green instead?

Sorry for the nubbish questions. I am about as new to this game as you can get. Bought my first booster and read the rules today.

You can play any color with any color if you want to.

The game is all about combos (cards that work together to make cool things happen).

You'll eventually learn which colors you'll prefer playing and that coupled with the cards you'll pull from boosters will determine what kinds of decks you make.

but reguardless as a magic player you'll end up with a ton of decks off all colors and some of those will inevitably be your favorites.

but to answer your question there are no rules about what colors match, and red and white actually play pretty good together.

current decks i have:

black and green
black and white
all blue
all gold(cards that have multiple colors in them)
all white
all black
white and red

One assumes you're actually talking about the We Are Legion White Into Pack for M10? It's a white 40 card deck with a couple red cards in it and comes with a foil paladin?

That's actually a pretty good deck as intro decks go. I had some success last night using a deck more or less based on it and filled out to 60 cards. Roughly from memory, I dropped out the Prodigal Pyromancer and the Undead Slayer and some of the buff enchantments. Bulked the burn up to 4 lightning bolts 2 fireballs and 2 pyroclasms. Added some less crappy white creatures. blah blah

Anyway, yes it's a playable and fun deck. Just add enough red burn spells that you get some use out of diluting your white mana and losing some of the mono-white synergies. Don't want to have three mountains in play with two copies of Armored Ascension in your hand while your one and only Lightning Bolt is at the bottom of the library.

Ya that was what I ended up buying. I have opted to go with a white/green deck now and I think I have a decent one going. I may post it up on the forums later this week. Im gonna get another fat pack so Ill wait til after that so I can fill out a few more of those uncommons I want multiples of.

Im also thinking about buying a bunch of old elf cards off a guy at my store for cheap. Elf decks look insanely good and fun. Im not particularly looking to have all my decks up to date because I cant afford to buy a new competitive deck every 6 months. As a Student the income isnt nearly high enough.

I played an almost completely banned deck the other day and acctually won a few games. He had an old german card that didnt allow untaps. Coupled it with a 1/2 creature that could tap to send a card to his hand, and well I didnt untap but he did. Tough games but were fun when I beat it.

careful when you're saying the cards are banned.

just because they're not the current set doesnt mean they should be looked down upon. there are many many formats in magic when it comes to competative play and "standard"(current set) is just one of them.

also banned is different from not allowed in a certain format

and also remember that no matter how old a card is, if they reprint it in a new set all of the versions of that card are legal in standard again

Well he had all old cards and is a big time collector. As we played he told me which cards were banned so Im just going off what he said. I forgot which ones were banned exactly but he said a lot of them were.


These were the various cards he ran

Stasis
Cornered Market

Time Vault
Time Walk



He also had a card that made all the cards I put into play, come into play tapped. When it all came out he had an absolute lockdown.

Time Vault and Time Walk are in fact Banned/Restricted. The others are all legal in the appropriate formats. They're also banned/restricted more because of the tricks you can pull to create infinite loops of turns with the right combo, more than the card itself being too powerful for the format on its own.

Ya I looked up some lists and saw the time things being banned.

The mastermind/stasis combo is crazy.

He also mentioned he has a red deck that can do an infinite damage burn which is pretty cool.
