I'm with you. Funny thing, in a WD not too long ago (the one where they introduced the DA codex, I forget which) there was a painter's workshop on how to do damage. They cautioned that you shouldn't use too many marks, as it will look more like "abstract camouflage" rather than damage. Ironically, that was the immediate impression I had when looking at their test model. Damage looks best when it's kept to a minimum. Nobody gets THAT many itty bitty dings in their armour.

That said, they're all well painted. I hope my upcoming marine project turns out as well.

For me actually I disagree. Since its the 41st Century where our galaxy is in constant war I actually see Space Marines above all else get a lot of battle damage since they are usually 95% of the time on some planet fighting one of the many enemies of the Imperium; especially their traitor brothers the Chaos marines.

If you really look at how GW set-up the 40k world with the grim and mass war and violence in the galaxy it won't be surprising to see a guy coming back finally after like 20+ life/death battles with tons of battle damage on his armor or even missing an arm or something.

Cool, you have percentages! Made up or do you actually have a source (If made up I don't care. It's like saying 60% of the time, you're right everytime). I would believe that about 30-60% of the time they are traveling through the warp or flying between systems. Space travel is slow, and marines don't get special treatment from the Immaterium.

Sure they would be damaged, but the techmarine and artifacers would repair that armour between battles. I'm pretty sure they also throw in the paint job, so let's just say that those marines that have extensive damage have been crusading without a techie for a long time.

On the other hand, being near to (and surviving) a, say, mortar explosion is going to shower you with a hell of a lot of hot, high speed shrapnel. It wouldn't take much of that to put scratches and chips all over your armour. Then picture a massive seige, with bolter mini-grenades constantly exploding all around you, continuous lasgun fire almost causing epilespy with its intensity, and the odd hand to hand spar with a crazed chain-axe weilding maniac.

I'm pretty sure that in some of the more intense battles in the 40K history it would not have taken long to gather some seriously stupid battle damage. Just think: Defense of Hades hive in 2nd and 3rd war for armaggeddon (although there wasn't much more than a crater remaining in the 3rd), the seige of the cadian gate, the front line of the damacles crusade in the heaviest firefights.

This kind of battle damage is not that far fetched.

Although, I will agree with Canew in that THAT much battle damage does end up just looking like a kind of funky camouflage. But hey.

I like this one the most. I don't think it's the scratches I like but the paint job. Generally the effect of making him look dirty has been handled well. The shading and highlighting isn't too heavy and stomping all over the model, it also isn't too weak leaving him blank. I also like the colours used, they look very good together.

Personally, I like the first Ultramarine. He is obviously battle damaged and been seeing some action (not *that* sort!), but it's not covering almost every square inch of his armour. I admit that I find that much battle damage a little off putting - spoiling the paint jobs underneath nearly as, in my mind, it distracts from the mini itself.

Also, everyone notice that those with helmets are pretty much all complete with glowing eyes? hehe

You're right, he is very good. The charictaristic i liked most about him wasn't the details or the battle damage but how he was painted. The colours used seemed more sombre and colder than is normally seen on an Ultramarine. I think it is very good because Ultramarines are probably the most commonly seen Marine chapter but this paint job does that Ultra thing differently which is very interesting to see.

Black is one of the harder colours to paint in my opinion.

I think that both of these make the the black look to flat. In the first photo it might be because of the photo quality, but in the second I think it's because of the paint job.

The contrast between the black interior and pilots and the brighter hull is not good... It looks like he gave the model a black undercoat and didn't bother to paint the pilots. My pick would have been to paint the pilots any other ceolour than black. If keeping to black he should have picked out some more details or made more distinct highlights.

In all other respects it's a very nice model.
