Default Foundation - GW paint conversion charts?

Hi all,

Given that the Foundation range has pretty much just been launched, I don't suppose there's a conversion chart to 'normal' GW paints available anywhere?

TIA

Well, no.
There isn't (and almost certainly won't be) a convertion chart, as they are different colours.

There are similarities with several of them, but mainly they are designed as a compliment for the 'normal' GW paints, rather than as a replacement.

I guess if you wanted to know like... RGB values you could use this:

Citadel Paints in HTML - This is a PDF

It's made for the Space Marine painter on Bolter and Chainsword.

Then again, I'm not sure what you are asking for.

Thanks minus_t. Sorry, I saw the colour charts in the new edition of WD and they seemed the same to me. Obviously time to get my eyes checked again

However in that vein there could be conversion chart from Foundation to Vallejo then? If not now then sometime in the future...

RGB chart is a good idea. It works for designers....

Another idea is to paint a square on white paper of each paint you own. I always double paint it after its dry, this is because many need layers to uncover the pigment under the streaks.

Mostly RGB charts are rubbish compared to how a pigment 'flows' I believe. most GW pigments are rubbish hence why you have foundation I expect. In terms of comparison just ignore the names and try and group them in what the are based on. So thus Liche purple circa 1989 is a red hue purple. NOT a blue based purple.

Current ice blue is green hue based- not pure blue.

Try and master what the pigment is under the name and you will be flying. Most acrylic break with too much water added: so why not bust them to find what the base pigment really is.

yeah reading "SUNBURST YELLOW" as 255 212 0 suggests that is a fairly 'pure' colour.

In my experience this is not the case because the pigment does not tend to be solid enough not mix with darker colours and retain its colour. Hue and gamma levels dont mix the same as food dyes. If only I understood that when I was a kid

Foundation has lots of 'earthtones' in it. They will mix better with each, yet not be as mad vibrant. Thats essentailly as they all have brown in them with less pure bias looking at the RGB figures.

(I work with RGB colour everyday if you wondering)

If you want some real fun with foundations, they break down right fast with a bit of water added. With one carelessly un-dried brush you can get an awesome hot pink color and a rather pedestrian brown out of Mechrite Red! Necron Abyss can get almost unworkable. I find with even the amount of moisture leeching through my sat-wet it sometimes yields streaks in one place of a metallic almost black color and streaks in other places that are close to Mordian Blue.

I almost exclusively use them as base color coats for my figures. The "normal" paints just don't cover that well, so I use the foundations to cover the black or white evenly and then work up to the "real" color I want.

For example. Any of the GW reds just don't cover black. In the past I was going: black to bubonic brown (2 layers or so) and then to red(many layers)
I've been happy with necron abyss for the base coat for my dire avengers(which goes to ultramarines blue) in one easy step.
