Clean coat of orange

I've heard that when painting large areas of white on a miniature, you should first apply Bleached Bone to those areas since it sticks better to a black undercoat than Skull White. I was wondering if there was a tactic similar to this to get a nice, clean coat of Fiery Orange..

Yea maybe that, cause white is kind of a transparend color...
So I would think you are right there...

Brown is your answer.

This will work for Red, Yellow or Orange.

If you prime black, put down a base coat of a light brown color. I use Ral Parthas East Indian Brown but any light brown will work.

You get effects like this for Orange (ignore the rest of the fix, he stinks, but I managed the helmet pretty good):

Then for yellows and reds its just a question of how far over the brown you want to build up the brightness of your color like so:
