This guy is the first of what I hope will be a full Crimson Fists army. I was inspired by Cyric's Dark Angels and I've tried to replicate his simple but striking highlighting scheme here. ![]() Any comments or suggestions about how to improve the scheme, especially with regards to the highlighting, would be greatly appreciated. In a similar vein, does anyone have any suggestions for applying transfers to the rounded surface of space marine shoulder pads? I tried to put some transfers on this guy last night and failed miserably. They keep bunching up since I'm trying to get a flat surface to lie on a curved one. |

The marine looks very good, youve painted him up to an above average tabletop standard and im sure if you had a full army painted this way it would look stunning on the battlefield. However if you are looking for some advice I would say the highlighting is a bit thick in some places, such as the back pack and the lower part of the legs. I would suggest putting a bit less paint on your brush and perhaps watering it down a bit more, this will increase the transparency meaning your highlighting will blend better into the base colour. For thinner highlights you could also try using the side of the brush (rather than the tip) to gently drag along the edges of the model, this will ensure the line of paint will be thinner than just dabbing it on normally. As for the transfers, I have heard that if you make a small cut at the top edge of the transfer this will help if sit well on SM shoulders, as it will be more likely to want to curve round the surface rather than sitting flat. Any questions dont hesitate to ask, good luck with the army! Zezza |

I actually prefer more blue than red on the model; I really like your test model, bandits. Is there a reason you didn't paint both of his fists red? Fluff, preferring it that way, etc.?

Looks like you're off to a good start with this one - I hope some of my advice helped you. The only thing I could recommend is thinner lines for the highlighting, but this is a good test. I'm curious about the single red fist as well.

I really like that Depressingly Zezza just summed up everything I could have said or was intending to It is a very bold highlight. I know a couple of folk like that and it looks lovely if u get the right balance of it. But for crimson fists, I think a more subtle approach is best I'm not a Crimson Fist player, so take what i say with a pinch of salt, but I'd go 50/50 between what the others have said. Zezza is bang on for what hes said there, use the side of the brush for highlighting edges on armour, but be careful with it as it can be easy to "splodge" it. I think u need a bolder colour for the trim on your shoulder pads. In keeping with what Raltor said I'd go for Red. But thats all I'd add to it. Too much crimson can look silly, and will make it harder to highlight. I think u have a good balance with what you have there. If you want to keep it bold highlighting but add in something more subtle what u may want to do is have it in 3 layers. or 4 if your a good enough painter (hard to judge on one model, but I'm sure you are) as in have one Blue thats darker than the regular armour. and have the armour colour as a highlight over that, covering most of the model but making the recesses very noticeable. Then on the plate use a more subtle highlight colour to make the very standing out bits that bit more bold, but have that not very noticeable and only in areas that make it look like there is a light shining down on the model form an angle. Its very hard to do that properly. but i reckon if u get the right balance it would look amazing. and yeah, what you have there is above average. so even if you only saved your best for characters and had the rest like that it would be brilliant to see. Love the basing as well by the way.

I like it. You don't often see it and I think that singles it out as HIS crimson fists. I was also wondering why though. and sorry, i was typing when Cyric and Nemisis posted or I would have acknowledged them as, as i said, i ain't a fist player, they are. and experience is vital when painting armies comes into account. Listen to them before me mate. And I concur with the others. can't wait to see the rest. Hope you haven't set yourself too high a standard haha

I like the scheme alot. I actually like the blank shoulders- that one red fist is more than enough to point them out as CFs. Rare army too, way to go picking it. Just like the fluff? Anyways, it looks like you did ALOT of highlighting. Remember the rule of lightsources. Not every edge needs a highlight, it'll look alot better with less highlighting and more uniform highlights instead. Maybe you knew this, maybe i'm just blind. Who knows? Also- the thick highlights look cool. The model is a representative of SciFi, and just a model soldier so a thick 'comic-book' highlight makes them look really cool in my opinion.

Ha. That post just absolutely blew mine out the water. I agree with the 1 fist, as already mentioned I am however curious as to why it is there. and you just summed up whats wrong with a templar model I've been looking at like "what is wrong there" for weeks haha. too much highlighting. thanks a bundle mate.
