I find three layers is best, whether for drybrushing, blending or layering. Less is obvious and more takes up time that would be better spent getting better at doing those three.

i dont know about blending or drybrushing since i just started learning to blend and i dont use drybrushing, but i think 3 layers isnt enough on layering atleast not if you really wants it be smooth, if i do a hero or lord i almost do ten layers of color + alot of glazes. on a normal figure i might do five, but then again it goes awfully slow for me to paint a figure. thx for the tip on blending |

It is quite possible to get a smooth blend with only a few layers of "different" colors. I like to qualify different because what I usually do is apply several thin coats of the sme color until I get a smooth apearance. Sometimes one pass of a color is not enough... I think a big key to getting smooth blends is to thin your paints to the point where they just start to become transparent... When the layers of different colors sit near each other and they are slightly transparent they will blend together even better than painting from the pot. Cheers, -Mike
