I'm was flipping through the Necrons codex when I spotted a colour scheme I'm rather fond of. Seeing the Necron warriors remind me of the introduction to Terminator 2: Judgement Day, I was after a colour scheme to reflect that and this one fits the bill. For those of you with Codex: Necrons, flip to page 42 to see the model I'm talking about. It is the third one in the top row of metallic-painted Warriors. According to this, the basecoat is a mixture of both Chainmail and Armour Wash. Highlighting is done in Mithril Silver. Mithril Silver and Chainmail are two paints I have already, but Armour Wash? I've never even heard of it and the Games Workshop (Australia) site doesn't seem to have it either. I know a guy who used to work at Games Workshop and I asked him about it. He's never heard of it so I'm just wondering if it is a mixture of two existing inks. The only ink I have at the moment is Black Ink... while the little diagram indicates that this Armour Wash is rather dark, I don't think Black Ink in its own would do the job somehow... So what is Armour Wash?

It was their old name for black ink. I had a bottle of that last me a long long long time. Also.. It seems that back in the day their inks/washes were watered down. Nowadays I find myself adding water to my inks. Soooo black ink + water = Armor wash. -GM

Armor Wash was was indeed a (now discontinued) black wash. It was thinner than straight ink. You can mix your own by adding water and a flow enhancer (one drop of liquid soap, clear acrylic floor wax, or comercial flow enhancer) to black ink. A much better mix can be bought from Wonder Wash Inks on line. They produce very good washes.

You can still buy armour wash from Coat d'arms. That was the company that originally made GW's paints.

I was at Games Workshop today so I asked the guy. I think I know what I'm doing now... when I get my first battle force I think I might undercoat a Warrior and take it along just to make sure.
