How do you make Grey Knight Power Armor look half way decent? I tried and it looks like crap. It's too blue and too shiny. The previous method someone at a GW store imparted to me was

1) Black undercoat
2) Drybrush BG metal
3) Drybrush Mithril Silver
4) Blue ink (straight, no watering down)
5) Drybrush Mithril Silver again

At first I was not overly happy about it, but now that I look at them again, I can say they look like garbage. I'm guessing that drybrush works on dark coloured marines, (like my Crimson Fists,) but not on something metalic.

Anyone got any ideas?

I was also thinking about painting them similar to a model I saw in the new 40k rulebook. In the back, in the pics section, there is a pic of an Inquisitor with a Daemonsword and eagle and his armor looks nice. Like really dark washed metal. I wouldn't mind my GK's looking like that.

Thanks!

I did Black Undercoat->Boltgun Metal base coat -> blue ink -> chainmail silver (vallejo version)

To make the gold look good, GW has good advice on using brass then brushing over with gold then filling in with chestnut ink or flesh wash to make sure you bring out all the details.

Other than that, I always paint best when I can just look at someone else's paint job in a book and I can see what I want things to look like in the end.

This is what i did and it looks very nice (Y)

-Black undercoat
-Then I put some Black on a pallet and added a bit of fortress grey to it nad then did a brubrush.
-THen I kept adding a bit more Fortress Grey to the black and did another drybrush
-I repeated these steps until i got reletively close to an original Fortress Grey, then i added some white into it, and Drybrushed it. and if its still a bit to dark do a very light drybrush of just white.

Its easy and looks good

So you're suggesting non-metals on GK's? I've seen some non-metalic metals (NMM) and some looked good. Some didn't. I guess I'm scared my GK's will look lame. You got some pics of your NMM's?

naw, but once i get my Digital Camera i will post them up. I dont do NMM much, but i was kinda wanted to try it, and the drybrushing makes it look way better. If you just paint the grey, then i dont think it will look as good as it drybrushed, depends how good of a painter you are

What I did with GK's

Prime white, then black ink wash over that. Then a thin medium grey coat, avoiding the blacklining and the parts that will end up gold (the runes, helmet, etc) and stuff like purity seals. After that I did another wash, very thin blue, to give it a cool color cast.
Then work up to a white highlight (drybrush or blend).

I did the helmet, the runes, and the insignia NMM gold (well, kinda NMM), which turned out pretty good -- I really dislike metallic paints these days.

I'd upload a pic but I already sold the suckers (only had 5 marines anyway).

The blue wash was key in the ones I did, as they had a decent amount of red, like purity seals, boltgun casing, robes, which really gets set off by the hint of blue in the grey armor.

1. undercoat black
2. base coat chainmail / blue ink mix about 50-50
3. go back over it again in chainmail leaving the shadowed areas in blue
4. highlight the silver with mithril
5. shining gold to the insignia , etc . . .
6. chestnut ink over step 5
7. shining gold drybrush over step 6
8. red gore to book , purity seal wax , etc . . .
9. highlight step 8 with blood red
10. kommando khaki on purity seals paper and book pages
11. bleached bone over step 10
12. white highlights over step 11
13. black ink and very thin and stiff brush for writing
14. chaos black for storm bolter and halberd shaft
15. codex gray highlights over step 14

What I did for my grey knights is... Paint them grey... I personally like it a good deal more than the standered metal colors, as I hate metals in large quanities. But if you are a good highlighter, you can pull it off. *Warning* If you don't like painting very much, and you don't enjoy painting models, don't bother with a true grey.. One lone terminator took me 7 hours, the longest paintjob I have yet done.
