Ok, I want to put some black gems on my eldar (purple armour) and the way I usally do gems is by doing a basecoat and having a light colour at the bottom, and a darker at the top, so can anyone sugget a way to do black gems? as you can't exactly get a darker colour than black.

what you want to do is paint the gems very very VERY dark grey , then at the bottom corner black and put a white line across the top corner . that will make the gems look more see threw .

Some blacks are merely very, very dark colours. You could highlight in darker shades of purple, green, blue or red. I've never much liked grey highlights except for doing NMM.

Simply do the gem all black, where you'd put the highlight paint a line of old Regal Blue and then the dot of Skull White where it belongs. Couldn't be simpler, really.
