I was curious if there where any paints availiable that are like the GW paints in quality, but less expensive. I've heard mention of Vallejo paints, but I've never heard of them before. I know that the GW paints are a type of acryllic, but I'm not sure if it's a "Super-Top-Ultra-Mega-No-One-Can-Know" mixture or an expensive version of the stuff they have in my art class.

If anyone could give me a rundown that would be great.

Thanks.

I am sure that the topic has been covered ad-nauseum but here is my opinions. There isn't anything wrong with GW paint other than the pots they put them in. Vallejo Game color mimics the GW line very closely and comes in eye-dropper bottles. You can use craft paints which will be a lot cheaper and you will get more but at a cost of good quality paint. The craft paints tend to be chalkier and the pigments are a lot larger.

You really need to consider what you are painting. Miniatures don't take very much paint and the small bottles will last you a good long time. If you are doing large terrain pieces - craft paint is a good buy.

Hope this helps...

Cheers,

-Mike

I prefer both Vallejo and Reaper over GW paints. Vallejo paints are cheaper by volume and can be found at any good hobby store(GW are NOT good hobby stores), or on online stores such as the {Ads-Protection}. Both Vallejo's and Reaper master paints are in dropper bottles, which allow for much easier transfer to the pallete and allow for easier mixing. Not only that, but you don't waste paint. Vallejo's Game color line is identical to GW line, but their Model color line is HUGE. It has pretty much any color you could want. Reapers line is a bit differant, but its very good for a natural, organic look. Reapers also have nice little pewter agitators in the bottoms of their paint so that you can shake them up real good. So stop feeding the monopoly and grab some good paints!

Dervian (an Aussie brand) has recently released a range of mini paints. I find that they don't bond as well as Citadel but it's nothing a quick coat of varnish won't fix and they're cheaper.

Actually, if you get some extender ($10 at a craft store will buy you a lifetime supply, in my experience) you can buy Delta Ceramacoat Paints for a dollar a bottle, and mixed with equal parts of extender it flows as well as a fresh pot of slightly thinned GW. You also get 5 times the paint. If you are going to spend Gw prices on paint, go for some reapers or vallejos. The value is incomparable.

Problem with the craft paints is they use chalk as an additive as well as large pigments. It will not cover as good as paint designed for miniature models. If you want to go cheap and don't care about the quality of your paintjob then craft paints are the way to go. If you are serious about a good paintjob then I suggest getting a good model paint. Just remember you get what you pay for - which almost always rings true!

Cheers,

-Mike

Chalk or not, delta thinned the way I described performs identically to appropriately thinned GW paints. I frequently use black and white from Delta, and less frequently others, and I don't own any poorly painted miniatures .
