I know what you mean. I get the same feeling right after I base paint everything but haven't done any washing, drybrushing, detailing, etc. I always feel like I'm polishing a turd but things usually turn out alright in the end. My son & I paint together (I paint my tyranids & he paints his BAs, WHFB Chaos undivided, LOTR) and it's right after the base painting phase when he starts to get disgruntled, bitter & twisted about his work thus far. I always have to remind him that his model isn't even half done yet so don't cop an attitude...just walk away and re-engage when you're ready to give it the attention it deserves.

    Sincerely,

    The Wookie
    I hear voices...and they don't like you!

There is many a time where I have walked away from a figure and had to come back to it later. I tend to paint in a similar way to what you have described. I usually base coat much of the figure at once and apply the washes. It isn't until about the 2nd highlights that the figure takes proper shape. I know some people that paint a section until it is done so I am guessing that they have a bit less of the "ass" phase of the figure!

    Cheers,

    -Mike
