Stripping Paint...

I use catachan IG and for years have been happily painting them with a typical camo scheme- green, brown, and black. However, as of late, three problems have been buzzing about in my brain, each with a similar solution. First off, when I was a novice painter, I was rooting around in my garage for black spraypaint. I found some and used it, but when they were dry... they had no faces. I hadn't sprayed them heavily at all; it was simply that the spraypaint was the sort of industrial-grade stuff you might more commonly see on a car. Second, I'm going to start a LATD army, and I think a new scheme- blue denim and white 'wifebeaters'- would be more congruent with the Violators scheme I want for the Chaos Marines. I've already got the Daemon Prince . Finally, the aforementioned scheme is more appealing to me than the camo- I'm thinking of swithching my army's fluff from deathworld to only-slightly-less-dangerous hive ganger world.

As you may have guessed, my solution to this problem is a mass paint-stripping fest. Tanks, infantry, and officers all. I have come across several threads regarding stripping, but they leave me unsure of its effect- does all the paint, as well as the basecoat, dissolve, or will I need to go at it with a coarse toothbrush or something? How long will it be before I can paint them again? Is there one stripping material that I can use for all my models?

From the sound of it, and I've spend 15 years working in a family owned paint store specializing in automotive paint, you used an automotive lacquer primer, most likely a filler primer to be more specific but Krylon sandable primer has a fair amount of fill. Lacquer is a very tenacious paint and will be difficult to find something that will strip it without attacking the plastic; we would get questions about stripping plastic car bumpers all the time, general MEK based stripper will kick ass on metal models but will eat plastic for lunch!

If you’ve got the cash look into Bumper Strip, I think it’s made by SEM. You'd still need to be careful with the Bumper Stip as it's made for stripping ABS Plastics and I'm not sure if 40K models are ABS. Pepboys may carrier it but a good paint store catering to body shops and the automotive community should have it. If not try the break fluid trick, ever wonder why body shops paint their floors with epoxy paints? Break fluid will strip anything give enough time. Just be careful with the plastic models and go at it with a toothbrush.

Almost forgot, Bulldog makes a bumper stripper too, I want to say it's a bit cheeper as well.

Also, always test the stripper on plastic first, just to play safe....
