First test model of Imperial Fists-With pic

I have wanted to do imperial fists for ages but the yellow always put me of so if you can see anware i need to improve these models please tell me.

A couple of things...

Before you begin painting, you really should either file off or trim off the mold lines from the plastic. You could paint to GD quality and if there are still mold lines, it looks terrible.

Secondly, it may be easier to paint yellow if you prime white. The yellows look sloppy and not consistent.

I think BobaHat did some Imp Fists, I would ask him how HE painted them.

yeah,as previosly said,the mold lines need to go.apart from that,the yellow your using,what one is it,im asuming your using the GW paints,if so you should be using sunburst yellow,as far as i know thats the proper imperial fists colour.apart from that,an undercoat of white instead of black to make the yellow pop,and multiple layers of thinned down yellow instead of 1 or 2 layers of thick paint should help get a good texture,yellow is a hard colour to get right first time,so practise a bit more on some spare models till you get the look just right.

ok thnx for your comments just a couple of things:
1. i did undercoat white
2. i did use sun burst
3. i tried to get in contact with bobhat, he didn't reply sooo

For some reason the yellow is not coming across as vibrant enough. It almost looks more like desert yellow. Maybe start with the darkest yellow (I think it is bad moon yellow not sure) Maybe even mix a bit of snakebite leather into the yellow for the base and build up your yellow so you get a nice even yellow. You could also take yellow ink and glaze it to further get a yellow that stands out.

Right now it does look blotchy so furter thin coats will help that. I very much agree that you should clean the figure of mold lines before assembly and painting. If possible I would even go through and fix what you have already done. It's kind of a hindsight is 20/20 kind of thing but definitely something to think about in the future. Sure it takes a bunch of extra time but if you really care about how well they are painted this little step will launch the look a hundred fold.

Aye, as others have mentioned a good plan may be to start off with slightly darker colours and eventually work your way up to the yellows. I'd suggest maybe starting with Snakbite Leather then perhaps mixing yellow and snakebites with a 1:1 ratio. This allows the yellow to go on much easier, as well as typically looking better/smoother. After going with a 1:1 ratio you may want to go 2:1 Yellownakebite, though I'm not sure if I'd recomend this for ordinary troops. Perhaps save this for your HQ options. Next apply some yellow of your choosing, making sure to leave the crevaces where you painted the darker yellows. Lastly you may want to mix just a bit of bleached bone and yellow for the very tips of the armour.

Another problem you may be having is the thickness of your paints. It's typically better if your pain it just a wee bit wet; though too wet means that it runs everywhere. If you have it too thick then it kinda clumps up and becomes a nuisance.

Don't worry if you're having some troubles at first. Yellow is perhaps the toughest colour to sucessfully paint, and all of us had some troubles when we first began to paint. Don't get discouraged either, over time your painting skills will drastically increase. Just spend some time and before you know it you'll have some fantastic looking mini's...

So what do you think a white or black base coat????
This is what another one of my mate said:
1. White basecoat
2.Sunbust yellow
3.mix 2 parts brown ink with 1 part yellow ink(for shading)
4. 1.1 mix of sunburst and bad moon (for touching up where i dnt want the ink.
5. Bad moon yellow high lights.

and thnx for your comments. About the mould lines, this is only a test model so i'm gonna strip the paint of and re paint it.

I am painting yellow marines at the moment and am very happy with how they are coming out. Here is what I do.

1: White Basecoat
2: Wash with watered down Black Ink to bring out the details
3: First layer with Vomit Brown
4: Second layer with a 1:1 mix of vomit brown and Golden Yellow
5: Thrid layer with a 1:1 mix of Golden Yellow and Sunburst Yellow
6: Highlights with Sunburst Yellow

You can then use a wash of yellow ink to bring the paint job together if you want. Just remember to add water to your paints. The easiest way to do the above is to buy some empty paint pots and mix the paints in there, so you won't waste a lot of paint.
