OK dude, it's comming along well, but here are some pointers that may help.

My thoughts are that:

1. paint the joins in black, then drybrush red so you get the armour creases and joins black in the groves.

2. Higlight in a lighter red, or maybe even an orange.

I also think that in the GW manual 'how to paint space marines' there is a section on blood angels that is worth a look.

Also, try thinning the red or using a drying retarder. the paint looks a little glugy in sections so watering it down and doing more coats should leave the marine with a smoother finish.

Finally, and being pedantic, is that a sprue mark on the left shoulder guard?

Now that I've said that, i'll note your working in red which I think (along with white) is a pain. It looks fine so far but I think these pointers should help it look alot better.

Thanks for the tips, but this is just my basecoat. I just wanted to get some input before I inked it and started highlighting.

It's a nice basecoat, Bane, and you seem to have applied the red nicely.

What I would do in the next stages is firstly paint all the metal/gold parts black first, as metallics apply to black best (i.e: Chainsword, Bolt Pistol, Belt Buckle).

After that, I'd water down -just a drop or two- some Black Ink to wash over the gaps, to bring out the lines in the armour.

Looking very good so far though mate! ^_^

If you are careful you should probably finish the red first and then go back and do the details. You might have some minor touchups but if you are careful enough it shouldn't be bad.

For the blood angels I found that using a watered down vallejo smoke wash over the base coat of red and then highlighting up to blood red worked very well. The darkened areas aren't too dark that way (something you can get with black ink) and to me it looks more natural.

This should give you an idea of what a smoke glaze will look like on these guys:

Hope that helps!

The red looks good so far. Very smooth and clean. You might wanna shade it a little, looks flat. Good luck with the rest.

This method is very solid and gives a great looking red, stay away from highlighting red with orange as it will just look like a deep orange and that in my opinion is just wrong for blood angels!
