    Lan or wireless

I am about to get a computer for gaming. Should I go lan or wireless? I don't know a whole lot about computers, so I could use the help. What's faster and more reliable?

I'm probably not all that experienced either, but from what I have learnt (bearing in mind this was using Windows Vista)

Wireless is easier to set up a network with than cables, provided you're also connecting with other Vista computers.

Cable LAN is more reliable though (won't have interference or drop-outs) but I don't think wireless is that far behind in this regard.

If you're getting a laptop I'd be tempted to say wireless would be the better option, but if you're going for a tower/desktop most would have a LAN port on the motherboard, and putting in wireless capability might not be worth it. Besides, for a tower, you can get additional hardware to give you wireless capability, should you feel you need it.

Hope it helps, but perhaps don't rush out and make a purchase on my advice alone, as I'm no expert in manners such as these!

Thanks. I was leaning toward lan since I'm getting a desktop. The computer has the ability to be wireless, but I want something that won't lag or anything.

As far as connection speed, wireless has nothing on a wire. The signal has to be turned into a wave, travel through air, and then be changed back from a wave - whereas the data just flows straight down a cable. If you're worried about drops outs and not being fast enough go with the wire, and anyway, its not like you'll be walking around with a desktop...

I game with a laptop and with a desktop and there isn't a noticable difference either way.

If you're building a desktop though, I would definitely recommend a wired connection because.. your modem is always going to have to be wired so you might as well put it near your PC and make sure you're getting the best possible connection.

I use these, which imo are a lovely cross between the reliability of a LAN and the flexibility of wireless. I've used them for LAN parties with 6 Xboxes on the go, with no lag.

To be perfectly clear: wireless is great and in no way means it is prone to lag BUT, in a time line of infinity wired connctions will show to be more reliable even if it's only a marginal difference

Well that all depends on how close the wireless access point is, what you've got between there and where your PC is and even what your walls are made of.
