Ok, here's my delimma.
I just purchased a new computer and now I want a good, yet inexpensive, video card for it.
I want something that will be able to run graphics intensive games such as DOOM3 and DoW without any slowdown.
Right now I'm looking at purchasing the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. It looks like a good card, but I've read some reviews that are making me think twice. Apparently, they have terrible customer service if the thing breaks and aren't nearly as reliable as Nvidia cards.
I don't want to spend more than 250 for my card, so if anyone can help me out, then I'd appreciate it very much.
The 9800 pro is a good choice, it is much better than all geforces (except the 6800 series) The geforce fx series isn't very good with DX9, I have a Radeon 9600XT and it is very reliable, I have never had any problems with it. I would recommend a 256mb 9800 newer games like doom 3 and HL2 need it to run on high settings.
The web site that I plan on purchasing from has the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 256mb card, but it's only like 15.00 more than the 128mb card. I'm wondering if that just means that it's a cheaper quality 256mb card?
256MB Cards never cost a lot more than the 128MB cards, even though it is double the memory it won't give double the performance so the price is not a lot higher. If you want it to last for quite a while get the 256.
Hey, thanks for being the only guy to take some interest.
I'm definitely going with the 256mb card in that case. I really want to be able to play my favorite games without having to turn all the graphics settings down to zero.
You will be alright as long as you don't let any temps get above 50C. What RAM and processor do you have, if you don't have enough RAM or the processor is too slow it can bottleneck the graphics card.
It's an Intel Pentium 4 3.0Ghz with 512Mb of RAM.
I think that should be able to handle DoW quite well, but video cards are just so damned complicated so who knows.
Also, it's a 400 watt power supply, and I have ordered some extra case fans just to keep the overall case temperature down.
Heh, I have a friend who has a computer engineering degree from Georgia Tech and he tells me that with a lot of work and money we could super cool the whole damn computer. At that point there wouldn't be a game to come out for the next 10 years that I couldn't play on this comp.
I hate to double post, but I was also wondering if anyone knows if the ATI Radeon 9800 pro can be Flashed?
I know it can be OC'd, but I haven't seen any BIOS flashes online to unlock the OC feature.
If you know where to get one, then send it here or PM me.
Newer radeon 9800 pros (Rv360 core I think) can be flashed to an 9800XT, If you want to overclock radeon cards as far as I know you just need to download ATI tool.
