Did you read the article? They just killed the Oculus as a potential gaming system. They want to use it as a virtual-reality webcam so that you can FaceChat (or whatever the f*** it's called) your grandma from 30mi away.
They're buying it for the communication and social potential. It's their answer to GoogleGlass and the potential for companies to start making more of the "eyeware" style social interfaces.
Oculus is going to want to pursue gaming. That's what they built the thing to do, and that's what it does best. Facebook and social media are why we have things like Angrybirds and Farmville and other Zoosk/Rovio-fueled garbage. Few people use facebook from their laptops - systems capable of dedicated gaming - instead they play from their phones, something not meant for gaming at all. They like these games because you can link them to your facebook, you can bother your FB friends for fake seeds to grow fake corn to grow in fake fields that you paid real money for in some microtransaction, so that you can claw your way to the top of your 1850-person "Friends List" leaderboard in Farmville...
I'd be much happier if Microsoft or Sony had bought Oculus. Hell, even if Steam bought Oculus. That would actually be cool, since Steam has been threatening a system for so long now that it's become a bit of a joke. Not Facebook though. I get this sinking feeling that they're only looking for an in to make this a competitor to Glass, not to the Kinect and Move.
They'll most likely kill it, yes.
Though Facebook did say that it isn't their intention to interfere with the game dev part of Oculus, how much of this will be true only time will tell.
In the mean time I won't create too much fuzz about it, there are plenty of other companies going with Virtual Reality stuff to keep it going for the more hardcore gamers.
The funniest part was Oculus agreed to $1.6 billion IN FACEBOOK STOCK!!!!!! So, only $400 million in cash. The business side of myself says it might have seen as a good move, since FB stock is actually pretty poor and should improve. However, if it does not, they really will get hosed by the transaction. I am going to bet the latter.
