    graphics card help

    I'm planning the construction of my computer right now, and I need some help.I need to know of some graet budget cards. I don't play many FPS, and dont mind the effects being cut down some too, so what should I buy? I primarily play RTS's like DOW, rise of legends, etc., does this mean I dont need a as intensive vid card?

    I have just a few guidelines I'd like to keep;
    1) N-vidia based products
    2)I am only going with one card for now, but I want the option of SLI later, so SLI card compatability is a must
    3)price wise any where from $0 to around $170 at the most

    A cheap card that will give you lots of fun is the GF 6600 GTS 256mb ... and it's cheap enough.. probably about 100 dollars or so...
    I personally like Ati more than Nvidia (and now even more that Ati is part of AMD), and you could get a Radeon X850 for the same price.

    yeah cap, I was lookin at that card today, when I got a new Tiger direct catalog in the mail. They have it for 10 bucks cheaper I think.Also does any one know any thing about the 7300GS, It just seemed the right price, but I have yet to find any reviews for it( havent looked lately)?

    All right I never really looked at ATI very much, so I dont know what they offer. And somewhere I heard that the crossfire setup was expensive.

    I think you will be very happy with that card, and since your only playiang RTSs, the games won't be very demanding for graphics. I suggest to go for that.

    7300GS
    Don't buy any nVida card with the end numbers under 600 if you intend to do gaming.

    Anyway. What slot do you have? (PCI, APG, PCI-E)

    Thanks yacoby, but I can't tell you what slots I got, cause I am planning this computer out, and have not bought any of the parts yet.If it helps this is what I got planned so far;

    proccessor; AMD 64 3500+
    motherboard; Some thing cheap supporting the proc., and SLI, any recomendations anyone?
    memory; 1GB to start off
    hard drive; some thing 250GB
    optical drive;really don't know anyhting about them, any recommendations?
    OS;windows XP

    I hope that helps, But really Im just trying to learn how to build a computer, so I dont know much, and I am seeking your all know wisdom on all things computers.(bowes down and grovels at your feet).

    Make sure your motherboard has a PCI-E slot, as most good graphics cards now are PCI-E. If you want to use SLI or Crossfire you will need two PCI-E Slots. It is worth pointing out, incase you don't know that if you want two GPUs in SLI or Crossfire, they have to be exactly the same card. Crossfire is slightly more relaxed about card types IIRC

    There is a nice buying guide on GPUs here:

    I don't really know that much about computer hardware other than the GPU.

    what make?

    All right, Ive decided on a 7600 GT , but multiple companies make it. Is there any certain company I should buy from? Are they all equals? Does the performance stay the same from compony to company?
