Welcome to Librarium Online!
Is anyone else annoyed the way guard are portrayed in winter assualt. there are some really ridicules things such as,
1. No guard heavy weapons, only special weapons and only plasma gun and grenade launcher. Not even a single heavy bolter, the most prominent weapon of the guard after lasgun
2. Sentinels "Multi-laser" it is a lascannon, efective against vehicles and buildings.
3. The leman russ' battle cannon has no blast radius at all. Not a single explosion.
4. Vindicator assassain, why the hell do we have him he is an inquisition unit. I know we can get him if we field and inquisitor. we could do with some ratlings or sniper squads
5. The helhound is no good against infantry even though it says it is.
6. Only the russ and basilisk have hull mounted weapons
7.Kasrkins are good against infantry and heavy infantry.
8.The command squad is good but completly misses the essence of an imperial guard command squad. I mean this one runs into combat with a stormbolter, lightning claws and four nutters weilding eviscerators. AND SURVIVES!!!
9.Chimera has no turret options or hull options
10. Russ has no sponsoon or hull options
Well there are ten points, i do like playing the guard on dawn of war but they are so bland and unlike the real guard long games bet very boring. Though they did work it right with the basilsk. I wont even get started on enginseers.
IN CONCLUSION is anyone else upset with the way dawn of war:winter assualt portrays the imperial guard
My biggest pet peeve with the IG in dawn of war is that a squad of guardsmen takes up as much space in the OOB as a squad of space marines. Absence of heavy weapons is up there too, as is the vindicare assassin's presence. I mean, not only is he slightly out of place he's almost useless, I'd much rather see a Yarrick-Esque Colonel Commisar character, or a squad of Penal Legion last-chancer-type troopers.
There's a steel legion mod out there somewhere for DoW (i dunno if it works with the expansion) that has all the Sentinel weapon options, all the forgeworld IG tanks & varients (including baneblade varients), Rough Rider squads, heavy weapon teams, eldar jetbikes, fortifications (razor wire, mines, and dragons teeth) and a whole bunch of other stuff. Much better IMO but kindy buggy I think (haven't played it in ages).
Maybe they'll add some more stuff in the upcoming expansion.
707 Travalonian Armored Brigade
If the tanks succeed, then victory follows.
IG were made the way they were to prevent long protracted battles and keep a good flow going. The army has it's strength's, but it hard to play as a group of ridiculously expensive upgrades are required to get access to even a basic Leman Russ. I personally dislike the basilisks as I'm not used to having to babysit artillery units. Bassies would be better if they just autmatically engaged targets in range instead of you having to tell them what to shoot at every time. The IG was designed to revolve around vehicles so it has the sentinel for anti-tank, and the hellhound for anti infantry and the chimera to get your men up there fast. I wouldn't underestimate the grenade launchers the IG infantry have as they have some good range and can put op a wall of fire that is pretty impressive when used en masse.Originally Posted by Jythro_Bryhne

The Sentinel was originally planned to have a Multi-laser, but they scrapped it in favour of an Ammageddon style Lascannon to give the IG an Anti-vehicle weapon.
The Vindicare once belonged to the Imperial Guard though, before the Inquisition came along. So I guess this is why.
Everyone is pissed abt the Leman Russ. However, I must mention that only the Looted Tank and the Leman Russ in the original Dawn of War had a blast radius. The Leman Russ in Winter Assault attacks singular targets like the Chaos Predator.
Do not despair! Speculations include in the new expansion, Dark Crusade, there'll be all new Heavy Weapon Squads for the IG. But I guess it pails in comparison to Daemon Princes and Grey Knights... -.-"
Hey at lest the guard get something useful in the next expansion (and the yech tree may be altered as well, it certainly was for winter assault). But seriously orks are getting the shortest end of the stick. Newest unit... Flash gitz. Yay now we have a unit that can shoot.... more anyway. Ah well better than nothing but DOW seems to be putting the ork emphasis on shooting rather than CC, and that's just wrong.Originally Posted by RJCRaven
I agree that the russ is not done justice, hopefully things will be retooled in the next expansion to allow, oh I don't know, people to have appropriate weaponry.

The thing about dawn of war is that the elder and space marines are massively overpowered.
Elder can make 10 fire prisms tanks that are more powerful then a russ and have over 6000HP and this alone makes them unstoppable late game.
One thing i used to do is to fast tech to a falcon tank as the guard have no anti-tank before they can get Sentinels and then its GG.
Terminators are aslo unstoppable as they have over 700HP each and even plasma gun ungraded Kasrkins cant stop them, frags do help blasting them off there feet but thats only slows them down. They can aslo teleport right into your base and your guard squads cant kill them fast enough to stop them owning your base.
Lemans are useless tank killers, same for the baneblade as both of these tanks do better killing troops then other tanks and when you need to kill 10 fire prisms and you cant even give your squads missile launchers like the marines can then the game just turns into a joke.
"Hey sarge, this lasgun is heavy. I wish we had something lighter."
FF7: ABOUT RANDOM BATTLES
As I tell my friends, "Stop telling me that the Imp. Guard is unbalanced. They can't win late game at ALL."
Exactly. I think the idea of the IG in WA is to rush to tier 3 before anyone else does, and finish the game before the Chaos projectiles, the Termies, the Fire Prisms, or even the Nobs come along. The Guardsmen with Commissar attached make them a formidable force, esp. if you're knocking the opponent's feet off with Grenades.
But guess what? In the latest patch, Commissar no longer gives morale break immunity, but health regen is increased but grenade launcher now has set up time. How in the world are we to play the IG now???
Makes you wonder what the commissar will do when his squad breaks. He'll shoot himself? :w00t: ok not funny.
Ah ha! I was right! :w00t: Ok back to topic on hand.
Think ti'll make things a bit better for IG? Simply adding in HW for us to spam?
