Planetside was a great example of a game that reached too far. Back when it started (and I played from day 1 in the largest UK clan, DSV) it was a good framework let down by the fact that 300 people per side in an FPS is too much for both the servers and players PC's to handle.
It's possible that that sort of thing could be done now - and would be the best fit to 40K I can think of (better than any warcraft style MMORPG) but we'll just have to see what ideas the developers come up with, it's 18 months away regardless isn't it![]()
I dunno, I played it a bit last night and heres what I think so far..
I do enjoy how balanced it seemed, I mean, the empire I had joined were stuck at one single base, but within 2 hours we had captured3 other bases.
Now While I enjoyed it, as of yet I don't see it being worth paying per month, yes you do get acess to everything, but otherwise? I'm just not seeing it, Nor am I seeing any kinda of advancement as you get through the 'Battleranks', but that could be because of the trial nature.
I did enjoy how it was a big level and you just keep trying to get everything an how things went back and forth, which by the nature of respawning is very difficult to do once a whole team is stuck spawning at one place.
I can see it being a similar style for the 40K MMO, with the possibility of there being several planets. But I thinkthat if they don't include some real RPG elements, it won't have any real desire unless you happen to be craving 40K FPS action...which while fun it hould have more going for it I think.
If they do do something like Planetside, then they might have to leave out the SM as a playable race, as much as it could damage the gamplay. In WoW the majority of PvP IMO happened in Battlegrounds, where each team is limited in number, but in a PSS(planetside system) where player numbers fluctuate, an SM race would be very likely to always have the most players on at nearly anytime, but if they don't include them, it could hurt them in the long run...as I've explained before.
Lastly, (*cheer*) if we were to say it ended up being very similar to a PPS, then wheres the story other than the backstory? Again, my opinion may be skewed by not having full acess to Planetside, but technically, a true trial shouldn't leave you guessing, right? it should show you as many aspects of a game as possible so that you know and are sure of what your buying.
Of course, if you guys want, I can post more!
Mike
This is very awesome. I have wanted a MMO WH40K game for along time.
Maybe we should sticky this thread and post updates?
*The token German*
Torn between Emperors Children, Blood angels and space wolves now
I'd like to see a strategy MMO. Instead of 'Whoopee! New level! New attack!' it should be 'Whoopee! New Level! Two more Guardsmen following me around!'. Players would be able to choose the upgrades (more troops? upgrades? etc.) and their character would have more of a command role than a combat one.
Oh, and can't you still download Planetside Reserves? You get the full game for free, you just can't get beyond a certain level- so just make two or three accounts to get the specialization you want.
If you think Mathammer doesn't work and dice cannot be predicted, there's a whole field of mathematics called probability that would like to disagree.
As much as it sounds cool, the problem with this world (universe...) is that everyone hates everyone, not buts or ifs. Necron are impossible as Tyranids. Orcs, Chaos, and Dark Eldar could interact, maybe corrupt Guardmens. Everyone one else could interact, except again, everyone doesn't trust anyone to the point they hate each other. So... where does that leave us? To create a 40k MMO would have to include bending the storyline.
I can't believe I've not posted on this thread.
Ahem: If it turns out that this game is going to be MMORPG, I call preemptive suck on it, mostly for the reasons already expressed in the last five pages.
However, if this turns out to be a game in the ilk of the Battlefield series, then sign me up.
It'd be easy to control the teams to fit the fluff behind the game.
And since the primary way of killing each other in 40K is to shoot someone with a rifle, it lends itself that this game should revolve around shooting.
Also, Battlefield has a good handle on how to contol vehicles too.
...
Y'know what, why don't I just go play Batllefield?
