Rep Power: 84 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | In my desktop computer (Windows XP SP3) I have two hard disks. One is divided into two partitions (c: and d:), is connected via SATA cable and contains the system, page file, etc. The other hard disk is a single partition (g:) and is connected via IDE (the motherboard has connectors for both types of cable). After a certain time of the PC being turned on, G: disappears from the explorer view, and all shortcuts pointing to it break. It looks like the PC doesn't know it's there. It started doing this yesterday, after I moved my PC to my new house (only next door, so carried the case by hand). I've had the PC for well over a year before now and it's never done this before. I can make it reappear by running the Add New Hardware wizard (it searches for new hardware, and then G: just as mysteriously reappears in the My Computer view). I don't need to actually install anything though. This procedure is a bit of a p.i.t.a. though, so if anyone has an idea what's going on I would be most grateful.

I won't be too harsh! As you said you moved it... so the cable must be moved and it is not attached too good to the M/B... open the case and re-attach the cable. If it still has problems then your g: drive is commencing it's spirit to the Machine Gods!

Yeah that's what I thought. I've tried multiple times to remove then reattach both power and IDE cables, and it's doing it less often now... but it still happens from time to time.

Then they are the first signs that the hard drive is giving it's spirit up... save your data before it's too late and replace it. How long have you been use it and what use was it? I mean... were you using it everyday writing and deleting data off it?

I've been using it for almost six years as a second disk to keep music, install games & other data on. So yes, I think you might be right. ![]() I also just discovered it has only 740Mb left out of 80Gb. Time to get a new one!

Don't forget that you have to leave the 1/3 of the total disk capacity free in order the disk works properly... So yes I would say you would need a change!
