Rep Power: 33 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I'll soon by my self a new computer, and I wonder what kind of CPU I'd be best of buying. The computer will be handling some multitasking and some gaming, and the two CPUs I will have to choose from is Intel 2 Duo 3.00GHz or Quad 2.33. Any comments welcome, Oh, and the games I'll play are not new enough to really make advantage of multi core technology. Regards,

Assuming i'm interpretating the specifications correctly, the core 2 duo has a higher clock speed with is pretty nice for response time but then again the quad has a higher cache, swinging it in its favour. As far as I can see both are 64 bit if that makes any difference (if you are using/going to use linux, you can get a lot of use from a 64 bit processor). The computer I hae is running on an early model core 2 duo - it runs pretty quickly unless I hit it with something very CPU intensive, though a lot of that can be put down to windows vista being a bloated PoS. I guess the only answer is are you likely to use lots of programs that can utilise the cores effectively (video encoding springs to mind) since your posts suggests you won't be running the latest and greatest games? While I am not the best person to ask for advice I would say the core 2 duo seems a better option given its higher clock speed - the lower cache isn't that much lower.

Well I won't be doing very heavy things at the same time, but browsing the web, listening to music, burning CDs and such. I don't how much i'd really need those extra cores. Regards,

Visiting the profiles of the two members above me I notice they play the same tabletop game, and this is the only info available. Very suspicious, if i may say so. Regards, Posts reported, please close this thread!

Intel Core 2, socket 775. Both future proofed and now. Games I know I'll play are Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Medieval 2: Total War. In addition I'll be playing some other strategy based games and roleplaying. But no shooting! But it's really only a question between Quad 2.33GHz, Quad 2.66GHz or Duo 3.00GHz. Regards,
