Ok tonight i got a file from a friend and as usaul thought it would be nothing. Ahh the foolishness of complacency.

Well this virus or whatever you may wish to call it, once activated sends itself to all on your msn contact list. Whilst i restarted my computer fairly quickly after my sound does not work anymore.

Nothing at all. What could this virus have done to my PC?
I have ran a virus scan and deleted the file which was 'winhost.exe'

Please help

winhost.exe is a hijacker which means it will intermittently change your Internet Explorer settings / Desktop to the link of it’s author’s sponsors

I'm not 100% but Spybot S&D or Ad Aware should be able to get rid of it if your virus scan hasn't already.
I did a quick search about it and didn't find too much on removal, so I'm guessing semantic and norton can fix it.

Found out what it probably was 'W32/Bropia.worm.d' or a variant thereof
This is what my friend who got it said his computer identified it as. However this virus does not describe lack of sound as one of the symptoms.

My McAfee can't find it........useless dell

Any other suggestions?

I think I got it too

It came up as a bloodstained popup Saying "Dawn of Teh Dead Roks"
Luckly I didn't add him as one of my friends was recently hacked and I was still aware of it.

if you can get ad aware which is great for getting rid of some virus's and also spyware software which if left unchecked can seriously bugger up your comp, also ive got a program called privacy eraser which cleans up your comp by removing all temp files and cleaning up your back up hard drive kinda like an advanced defrager and system clean up

Ok for one I got Ad-Aware, removed virus (Y)
Secondly, it merely changed my master volume control, so i reset that and am now back with sound (Y)

Damn i almost fell for that thing too, like 50 ppl on my list were infected with it. Are you only affected if you accept?

yeah, u only get it if u accept. there are tons of thoes viruses tat go on ur computer if u add one. i fergot alot of them which kould scrw up ur pc.

I would have said it deleted your sound drivers, but hey. This is the reason my internet computer is a mac. How many people waste their time making viruses for mac.
