I did it.
After visiting my LGS (and getting eaten in a necrons vs. nids game first), I bought quite a few Cygnar bits, almost enough for a 500 point army. Left of West, you'll be happy. My store doesn't even sell the Cygnar starter set. Instead, they give a 10 percent discount to anyone starting Cygnar so they have the option of building their own "starter box." Seems you're not the only one who doesn't find it useful in the long term.
So, I bought:
Captain Haley (alternate sculpt)
Gun Mage Captain Adept
Long Gunners x 8
Plus I'm waiting for my free alternate Eiryss sculpt to arrive in the mail (NQ 14-16 FTW!)
So my "starter set" is:
That only comes to 335, though. Bummer.
I'm quite sceptical about the WM starter sets.
Part of why I loved the Hordes ones is 'cos they give you a real insight into the core mechanics of the game (fury manipulation and control), without any gumpf to confuse matters.
However, as cool as 'jacks may be, they can't really be the majority of your army, without really selling your 'caster short, simply 'cos of the focus mechanic.
Just my personal little gripe, I suppose.
Anyway, I shall watch with interest.
Cygnar and Khador are warring over my heart (and, indeed, wallet) at the moment, although every now and then Cryx and the Protectorate sneak in there (curse you Asphixious and Kreoss!).
Good luck bud, and may your dice always roll 6s'...

Ok, to answer multiple questions:
It cost me about $100, maybe $105 if I go back and get Reinholdt.
The base list is designed to be about 350 points and contain roughly the same base model count/stuff as the "box set." In other words, enough to get me started.
The long gunners, along with a to-be-purchased journeyman, will make up a 500-point list. I want to wait and play a bit before I say for sure how much farther I want to go, but I like the look of epic Caine, the arcane tempest gun mages, maybe some trenchers and another jack or two to get in the neighborhood of 1,000 points.
Yeah, yeah, Eiryss isn't "free," but since you can't buy that version of the model anywhere, I'll settle for "cheap."
