As per the title. I borrowed John's Protectorate, and faced Rob's Khador in a Battlebox game.
It started off as a mundane "walk towards your enemy and pulverise him" game. Sorcha popped her feat and I looked absolutely screwed from there.
However, I managed to set Sorcha on fire, and she began to burninate. From there, I threw Kreoss right behind his jacks, and stacked him up with buffs (he had Arm 21). He survived a scything from Sorcha, got back up, and beat her to death with his flail.
So I miraculously won that game, and had a LOT of fun with the pyromaniacal, suicidal nutcases. So I would collect them if they weren't one of the most popular armies at the club.
Since my Magnus the Traitor battlebox isn't likely to arrive any time soon, I'm considering ditching that plan and going with Cygnar, who will apparently be in stores next week. Hence what I'm asking, is are they any fun to play? The reason I ask is that I think there is a limit to coolness in an army that seems to rely on shooting, and there's no real point in winning a game if you don't enjoy it.
Barring Cygnar, what other armies are out there that are an absolute joy to run? I'm reluctant to do Khador, since it would be a bit too close to the Skorne (though the Butcher is very cool).
No army is 'limited' to any one style to win that I've seen; you can still include some melee goodness in a Cygnar list, even if they have some of the best shooters in the game. Sword Knights backed up by 'jacks, for example, is apparently a pretty sweet combo. So I'd say you can still roll with Cygnar just fine. Like Warhammer, you can design a list that is shooty, melee-y, or both; you have that freedom, and there are enough units to make it work.
LN is correct. Cygnar is fully capable of laying the smackdown in close combat if they so desire and can be absolutely brutal if going all out CC. Cygnar's main disadvantage is that they do not really have any 'beatstick' Warcasters that can take a beating and give it back. The only guy they have for this (Epic 'casters not in the equation) is Siege, and most of the time you want Siege back in the rear supporting your troops.
With Warjacks like the Centurion and units like the Storm Lances, Sword Knights and Storm Guard Cygnar is a powerhouse in CC. If you want to.
Hey there AFG.
I've played a few games with cyg(borrowing force) and several against.
Cygnar is an interesting army. They are the IK tech-heads. With the absolute best technology in the game.
They have fantastic shooting synergies, but that's not their only trick. They have a lot of other resources to pull from including Mercs such as Bokurs. Their jack-buddy warcaster(Darius) is probably the BEST jack casters in the game, making his jacks almost as tough as khador jacks with the cool tech and obscene offensive capabilities to back it up. A lot of people equate cygnar to shooting because they have a lot of good options for it(longgunners are obscene, long gunners with snipe + deadeye = profane... mostly because I start cursing at this point.) you can make them very competent at other styles of play, with the right warcaster and list composition, fill in with mercs and you have a CC list.. you just have to learn to play it right. Beatstick Cygnar will never be beatstick khador.
Your reasons for not playing kador is exactly why I stayed away from them(I played trolls) they seem to be way more in your face smash(like trolls). Though... khador and skorne differ in one very important way, thus play VERY differently. Skorne is super resiliant + excellent synergy. Khador is ALL about each model being obscenely good with almost no synergy(barring warcasters.. those guys only role is to synergize with the list and kill stuff) which is why Vlad is so good, he brings heavy buffing synergy to a force designed to stand strong as islands apart from other squads. Making an already really individually strong unit to EVEN STRONGER.
Try playing some more games of whatever factions are available to you and see what you like.
Go from there. Hope this helps.
