Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey there. I'm a veteran in Games Workshop games, and was getting the urge to start Warmachine. The Protectorate of Menoth really catched my eye, and I was wandering where to start, what kinda units to use, etc.?
I'm a dedicated WHFB player who started with Protectorate of Menoth (PoM) in WM - they are a great faction to collect, lots of variety in units etc but also the most difficult for a beginner to master as I am finding out.
The key word for PoM is 'Synergy'. Unlike other factions which have a number of really powerful units and character PoM units are designed to work with each other, various units and their abilities boosting the abilities and stats of the others. Once you get the combinations down your away laughing and PoM can be very very very hard to beat.
Anyway, hope the following points are helpful
PoM Starting army
Get the 'starter box' it comes with the following:
- Crusader Heavy Warjack
- Repenter Light Warjack
- Revenger Light Warjack
Kreoss is a good starting warcaster with a great feat and is easy to use (and learn to use) with some excellent spells (Protection of Menoth & Retribution). The warjacks in the box are OK as a starter, the Revenger is excellent though.
Building to 500pts
Next step is some good infantry units PoM have several, but I recommend starting with
- Monolith Bearer
- Choir of Menoth
- Idrian Skirimishers
The Zealots are fanatical fire bombing infantry, the Monolith bearer is a unit attachment who boosts their abilities. The Choir of Menoth is THE most important unit you'll buy as they boost and protect your Warjacks with their religious chants, e.g., Safe Passage means they cant be targeted by missle fire. Buy a unit box and a couple of extra Acolytes.
The Redeemer is a MUST have if you use Kreoss (see this site for details)
The Skirimishers are good for getting rid of those nasty shooting units from other factions.
Building to 750-1000pts
Next purchases depend on whether you want to be infantry or warjack heavy, but I would strongly suggest the following units.
- Another Choir
- Eiryss Mage Hunter (epic or normal)
- Temple Flameguard + Unit Attachment
- Devout Light Warjacks (help protect casters & good in melee)
- Reckoner or Castigator Heavy Warjack
Choosing another caster
Lots of options here, but heres a basic run down of the ones I have (cant comment on others):
- Amon Ad-Raza (melee & light warjack focused caster hard to play)
- Feora (awesome caster especially epic version but her feat is a bit difficult to use)
- Severius (should be your next purchase for a non-epic)
After that just go with what you want to have

Well, I picked up the Quickstart rules at my local gaming store, and took a quick look at them. I also picked up Kreoss, since, well, yeah, he looks pretty decent and well balanced, and I like the Exemplar units alot. Plus, I got myself a Warjack, a Castigator, the dual flame fist equipment was too tempting for me to resist. The Choir is a must, so I have been told, and since I'll be using a couple Heavy Jacks, they'll be priceless in my force. Finally, I plan on getting some Exemplar Knights, as they are an easy, solid Hack & Slash unit that go well with Kreoss. I have a feeling I'll be playing pretty offensively with my PoM, so, any other tips?
Exemplar Knights are very good, but i'd still put in some Zealots to give you some strong infantry support.
With Kreoss a Redeemer or 2 is a must have for the pop n drop technique. Pop your feat, enemy knocked down and ban Redeemer gets 3 PW12 rocket attacks all of which can be boosted against an enemy they automatically hit
Well, I made a 350 pts start-up list, following everyone's tips and advice.
- Full Unit of Knights Exemplar
- 7-man Unit of Zealots
- 6-man Choir
List looks good mate. But by my count that gives you 308pts so if you wanted you could increase the Zealots to 10 and add the Monolith Bearer to them, which would bring you up to 347 pts
If your going to run with Exemplars in the long-term then its definately a good idea for you to invest in 'Epic Kreoss', as he gives +1 MAT RAT CMD to Exemplar Units and 'Visgoth Rhoven & his Exemplar Bodyguards' as these guys add bonuses to your Exemplar units as well.
I wouldnt overlook the Temple Flameguard either with 'Shield Wall' & Kreoss's 'Protection of Menoth' on them your looking at infantry with DEF15 and ARM20

Well, I'm going for an exemplar theme, but, my goal is to have a Kreoss, Feora, Severitus and Amon Az-Ara armies, so lots of different types of units.
Sounds cool - best advice then is just get what you like and learn how to use it
Any advice on the devout, paladins, senschal, and the exemplars errant? Oh, and the Revenger.
