Hey guys, I've been meaning to get into WM for awhile now, but there aren't any retailers in our area.
So, now I've found the Vassal engine, and I'm wondering if anyone would mind giving me an introductory game? If so, we just need to set up a time and a place.
I also need to know which books I need to have for units, or would I just be better off finding all of the books?

I think, technically, you can get away without buying any books.
if you buy a starter box I believe you get a small quick-start rules leaflet. You can download something similar from the Privateer Press website.
All models come with a card which lists all their rules, so you can generally refer to that, even though it's probably easier to read the entries in the book.
However, Prime: Remix has the complete version of the rules (The quick-start rules are a slightly abridged version) and may be a good starting point.
This may not be the best place to mention it but I have heard rumours of a coming 'Warmachine 2.0' which involves revising or replacing the ruleset. It's a while away yet (2010-ish) if this information is even reliable, but it may be something to bear in mind?
I know its been a while since you posted this question mate, but yeah, you do need to buy at least Prime:Remix. The quick start rules (I don't think you get them in the starters anymore) don't give everything you need to know, but they are a good starting point if you can get a hold of a set.
After that, I'd recommend grabbing a Faction Deck of all the cards (except the ones in Legends) and downloading Tabletop Commander - a free army builder program for Hordes and Warmachine.
Prime:Remix is the main rulebook you need to play and reference. But the cards give all the rules for the seperate models. The additional books basically only have more models and a handful of rules in them.
Battlecollege is also a great starting point for information, as well as the Privateer Press forums.
Its great to see another person interested in getting into Warmachine, it truly is an awesome gaming system.
And yes, Mark II is coming out - they are doing a public "assessment" of all the rules in April this year. Then releasing the actual rules next year
But I call to God, and the LORD saves me.
Mk. II will be great, there will be a "balance" of point values finally! Currently the points are pretty off balance, as each book scales points differently . . . e.g. Apotheosis is scaled differently than Prime.
I would just get the Prime Remix personally, and wait for the new rules!
